Mr. Hervey Rogers died at his residence on Colony Street, on Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock, at the age of 70 years. He had been dangerously ill only since Tuesday last, but his health had not been good for the past two years. Mr. Rogers was born in Middletown, but his parents moved to Chester, when he was very young, and until the year 1849, Mr. Rogers lived and did business in Saybrook, and was married in that town in the year 1826. After coming here, Mr. Rogers engaged in the hotel business, purchasing what is now known as the Rogers' building from Major Cowles, and he carried on the business for twenty years, after which he retired from active business. Mr. Rogers has always been a highly esteemed citizen, on account of his upright character, and his endeavor to carry Christian principles into his every day life. He was a leading member of the Methodist Church here, and did much to aid the church in attaining its present prosperous condition, and he has always been a strong temperance man, and has taken a deep interest in everything pertaining to the cause. His private life has been a happy one, and has lived to see his children all grown up, and occupying positions of usefulness in the community. Mr. Rogers and his wife, who survives him, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary four years ago last Thanksgiving day, and on that occasion their children and grandchildren, to the number of twenty-nine, were present. Of their nine children, six are still living, viz: Mesars. Hervey, Cephas, Gilbert and Wilbur F. Rogers of this city, N. Burton Rogers of London, England, and a daughter, who resides in Middletown. The funeral service will be held at the Methodist church, on account of the large number who will desire to attend, on Wednesday, at 2 p.m., and the services at the house will be very brief.
