Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 19, 2008, 8:37 am PERMANENT IMPROVEMENTS AT ALMS-HOUSE A new barn was built at the Town Farm last year, but as there was no shed room for storing carts, farm utensils, etc., it was found necessary to build a shed in connection with the barn. The contract was given to the Union Building Co., who completed the terms of their contract in a manner perfectly satisfactory to the Selectmen. A new stone wall has been built in front of a portion of the Town lot. This work was done while the Rubber mill was stopped, thus giving many men work whose families would have otherwise suffered from want. Elm trees have been set out on each side of the driveway leading from the house to the highway, and ornamental trees have been placed about the house and fruit trees in the orchard. Blinds have been placed upon the house by Mr. Eugene Standish, and the house and barn have been repainted by Mr. Charles Hollin, thus giving the Alms house and its surroundings a very neat and home-like appearance. On the 1st of June Mr. J.L. Beers resigned his position as keeper of the Town's poor on account of the ill health of his wife; and Mr. George Carrier was hired to take charge until the 1st day of April, 1883. There have been three deaths at the Alms-house during the year, viz: Griswold Ayres (Apes - ed.), who died Oct. 27th, 1881; Amasa Hyde, who died June 1st, 1882; Hannah Hyde, who died Aug. 10th, 1882.
