Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 20, 2008, 12:40 pm Colchester Town Treasurer's Records: Dec. 25, 1713: James Newton, Jr. credit for keeping school 4 months & 4 days in ye year 1712/3.....L00/06/08 1723: Ensign Ephraim Wells credit to money paid to Samuel Wells for his wife keeping school.....L2 Dec. 24, 1717: To Nathaniel Loomis, Jr. for money payd by Thomas Loomis, collector, for your service in keeping school the year 1716 1723: Lt. John Skinner, credit to keeping school two months the winter past at 50 pence? per month.....L5 May 10, 1719: Then agreed or bargained with Mr. John Lin to keep school nine months from this day forward and if the abovesaid Lin do faithfully perform the duty of a schoolmaster in teaching the scholars that shall come to school in "reding and riting and sifring and gramar" then we promise and engage to pay to the abovesaid John Lin twenty-six pounds in current money of this Colony. As witness our hands (signed) Joseph Chamberlain, John Skinner May 12, 1720: Received then of Ebenezer Dibble the sum of ten pounds five and six pence which is in full of the scholar's rate which appears by a receipt from Mr. Lin, schoolmaster (Note: Dibble was tax collector) Sept. 8, 1724: Than rec'd in full of what is due to me for keeping school in Colchester it being thirty pounds (signed) Nathaniel Loomis, Jr. Memorandum: That Nathaniel Loomis, schoolmaster, entered upon his word of keeping school June 20, 1720: being agreed with to keep school for one whole year from the date aforesaid, for the consideration of 33 pounds. Pr James Newton, Joseph Wright (Selectmen) Mar. 21, 1722: Kept school this year - Nathaniel Foote, Nathaniel Gilbert, James Newton, Nathaniel Loomis, Jr. 1722: Ruth, wife of Samuel Wells, to keeping school 10 weeks @40s 1724: Mrs. Hannah Coleman, to keeping school 16 weeks and a halfe @ 7s 6d week 1722: Ens. Nathaniel Foote kept school 4 months & 2 wks @ 50s per month 1724: Ens.
