Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 20, 2008, 9:04 am New London County Court, Nov. 1759, File #81: Tom Harry and wife Judith, Indians of Stonington, sued Symonds Whipple of Stonington for failure to carry out his part of the indenture agreement, dated April 1, 1745, by which their daughter Rest, aged four on March 3 last, was bound to Whipple. Rest was to serve Whipple until she reached age 18. Whipple was to provide meat, drink, apparel and all the necessaries of life, to teach her good housewifery, and to teach her to read English, and to teach her the "Assembly Divine's Catechism." Upon completion of her apprenticeship, Rest was to receive "two suits of apparel for all parts of her body suitable to her degree" and six pounds in Old Tenor bills of credit and one Bible. The Harrys argued that Whipple never took any pains to teach her good housewifery and never taught her to read English or the cathechism. Futhermore, Rest never received the apparel, the six pounds or the Bible, although she had faithfully fulfilled her part of the indenture agreement. Additional Comments: This information is taken from the writ or summons served to Symonds, which also included a copy of the original indenture agreement.
