Brown buwbrown@comcast.net January 30, 2009, 6:11 pm Aug. 6, 1781: Tax of 4 pence on a pound to procure beef cattle for the Continental Army. Elias Worthington Jr. to collect said tax. John Blish a committee of one to procure beef cattle and to deliver the same. Inhabitants might pay in beef if they wishd. Town to hire six men to serve in the Continental Army. Committee to supervise: Elijah Worthington, Nathaniel Harris, james Ransom, Noah Day, Joseph Isham, Jr. and John Isham 2nd. John Chamberlain given liberty to move his shop six feet further into the street. Oct. 8, 1781: Selectmen to repair bridge over Salmon River. Granted Daniel Foote the liberty of that wedge of land between New London Road and Lyme Road at the south end of Town Street to set up a shop, provided it does not obstruct traveling. Dec. 11, 1781: Selectmen to dispose of Phebe Watson's clothes which are in their hands, proceeds of the sale to go to the town treasury. "Ye number of persons in Colchester Feb. 7, 1782 of all complexions is males, 1675; females, 1690." Mar. 4, 1782: Voted that ye town be classed in twelve classes according to ye list of 1781 and that each class forthwith procure a man to serve in one of ye State Regiments ordered to be raised for ye defense of Greenwich, etc. Mar. 14, 1782: 12 men to be hired for Continental service for 1 year only Mar. 18, 1783: Abatement on taxes requested by Israel Holdridge Warnings for town meetings to be posted near the parish school house in Westchester from that time on. Voted to supply soldiers' families as usual Aug. 21, 1783: Benjamin Mather, Benjamin Staples & Elizabeth Quitterfield taken into custody by Elias Worthington, Jr., tax collector, for non-payment of taxes. Worthington was excused for delaying action until this meeting. There were others who had taken the Poor Person's Oath. Pierpont Bacon chosen to represent the town at the General Convention to be held at Middletown. Selectmen directed to settle Col. Eliphalet Bulkeley's account for serving as Barrack Master to the Regiments of Light Horse formerly quartered in this town. Bridge to be built across Dickinson's Stream.
