Peters, and their 2 children (Mary Ann, aged 2, and Amelia, aged 4 months), on expense. Also Mary Deming, widow of Isaac N. Deming. All are colored. Feb. 12, 1867: Lebanon to Manchester. John O. Peters never was an inhabitant of Lebanon. Mary Deming never was married to Isaac N. Deming, and Isaac N. Deming was not an inhabitant of this town at the time of his death. Mar. 5, 1867: Colchester to Lebanon. Jonathan Monroe is on expense. Mar. 1867: Memorandum. Mr. Monroe states that he has not asked for any help from the town of Colchester and he is not in need of any assistance. Mar. 16, 1867: Bozrah to Lebanon. George Austin, his wife Sarah Jane, and their 4 children (Julia, Mary, Sarah and George Austin) are on expense. Mr. Austin has cut his foot and will need help for only a short time. Apr. 15, 1867: Lebanon to Bozrah. George Austin not an inhabitant. Nov. 18, 1867: Lebanon to Colchester, Nov. 18, 1867. Margaret McNamara, wife of Thomas McNamara, and 4 children (John, Michael, William and Thomas) are on expense. Nov. 18, 1867: Lebanon to Manchester. Same as preceding. Feb. 25, 1868: Portland to Lebanon. There is a man in our alms house who was found in Colfut House in starving condition in the latter part of December. He has light hair, about 5 feet 8 or 10 inches tall, and calls himself Richard Stillbridge. We cannot get any reliable information from him concerning his history, for he is insane. I have been informed that he belongs to your town. Feb. 25, 1868: Lebanon to Portland. Have never had anyone by the name of Richard Stillbridge in our town. Dec. 9, 1867: Manchester to Lebanon. I cannot find that any of the McNamara children were born in Manchester. Jan. 7, 1868. Colchester to Lebanon. Payment for supplies furnished to the McNamara family. The child John does not belong to this town, but to Manchester. Apr. 2, 1868: Columbia to Lebanon. John C. Lewis and wife on expense. Apr. 9, 1868: Lebanon to Columbia. John C. Lewis not an inhabitant. Sept. 7, 1868: Coventry to Lebanon. Bill for support of John A. Jacobs about 9 weeks. Nov. 6, 1868: Columbia to Lebanon. Mary Deming, wife of Nelson Deming, on expense. Nov. 9, 1868: Voluntown to Lebanon. Hannah M. Armstrong, widow of Amaziah Armstrong, is on expense at the home of her son-in-law, Cyrus Foster. She is aged 87 and a cripple. Her daughter offers to keep her for $1.00 a week. Nov. 13, 1868: Lebanon to Columbia. Mary Deming was never the wife of Nelson Deming, and Nelson Deming was not an inhabitant of this town at the time of his death. Nov. 17, 1868: Lebanon to Voluntown. We are willing to pay $1.00 a week for Mrs. Armstrong until we can investigate the matter further. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong have not lived in Lebanon for many years, and they may have gained a settlement elsewhere. We are informed that they lived in Plainfield for several years. Nov. 24, 1868: Lebanon to Voluntown. We find no evidence that Hannah M. Armstrong is or was a resident of our town. Nov. 23, 1838: Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwid Hauerwas, a German, with his family, has applied for assistance. Dec. 1, 1838: Lebanon to Hartford. We are willing to meet our obligations concerning the Hauerwas family. Are they trying to help themselves? How many children are with them? Dec. 9, 1868: Hartford to Lebanon. The Hauerwas family has five children at home. Lincoln is sick with scarlet fever, the rest of the children with symptoms of it. Hauerwas cannot get along on his crutches and will not be able to do much work through the winter. Dec. 31, 1868: Norwich to Lebanon. Mrs. Hannah Armstrong, widow of Amaziah Armstrong, here on expense. Jan. 7, 1869: Chaplin to Lebanon. John E. Wells is sick and on expense. Feb. 26, 1869: Coventry to Lebanon. Charles McGan, son of Michael and Elizabeth McGan and born in Lebanon, is sick and on expense. Mar. 10, 1869: Columbia to Lebanon. Henry Tattoo, a colored man or mulatto, is sick and on expense. Mar. 27, 1869: Lebanon to Columbia. Henry Tattoo lost his settlement with his mother by her marriage and is thus not an inhabitant of Lebanon. Mar. 29, 1869: Chaplin to Lebanon. Bill dated Mar. 29, 1869 for support and burial of John E. Wells. (Note: Lebanon paid the bill.) Apr. 9, 1869: Norwich to Lebanon. Bill for support of Mrs. Hannah M. Armstrong Nov. 19, 1868 to Apt. 2, 1869. Aug. 19, 1869: Carr & Peters, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to Selectmen of Lebanon. Did your town pay any bounty at the time Thomas Carroll enlisted and was credited from your town? Aug. 26, 1869: Colchester to Lebanon. Abrham Marchant, colored, son of Jacob Marchant, is on expense at our alms house. Aug, 30, 1869: Hartford to Lebanon. Mr. L. Hauerwas is in a very precarious state of health; physicians say that there are strong symptoms of insanity unless he is attended to at once. He should be placed in the Retreat. Aug. 30, 1869: Coventry to Lebanon. Bill for supplies furnished to J. Addison Jacobs, Jan. 6, 1866 to Mar. 16, 1867. Bill for supplies furnished to Charles Megan, son of Michael Megan, 14 weeks to May 24, 1869. (Note: Lebanon paid the Megan bill.) Aug. 31, 1869: Carr & Peters to Lebanon. Carroll enlisted in Co. Father Hawley is not helping the Hauerwas family any more, and they have applied to us for help. Apr. 12, 1870: New London to Lebanon. We have had to furnish Thaddeus Lyman with more supplies. Sally Armstrong, widow of Joel Armstrong, is on expense. Mar. 27, 1871: Lebanon to Hebron. Sally Armstrong not an inhabitant. May 27, 1871: Hebron to Lebanon. Bill for support of Sally Armstrong, widow of Joel Armstrong, Mar. 1 to May 1, 1871. June 3, 1870: East Haddam to Lebanon. The wife and children of Francis L. Clark are on expense. June 13, 1871: Chaplin to Lebanon. Betsey Welles is on expense. July 12, 1871: Lebanon to Chaplin. Betsey Welles not an inhabitant. Jan. 1, 1872: Lebanon to Greenwich. Lebanon has been called upon to defray the expenses of burying the daughter of John Garrison, who is supposed to belong to your town. Bill: burial of Elizabeth M. Re Newton Jacobs, a patient at the Retreat in Hartford Mar. 11, 1872: Memorandum, Colchester: Application of Albert Harvey and Sally Harvey to become inhabitants of the town of Colchester; voted by selectmen and civil authority that they be admitted to settlement. Mar. 21, 1872: Lebanon to Greenwich. A few years since, the Garrisons were helped by the town of Columbia and Greenwich paid the bills (note: Greenwich paid the bill.) Fanny Robinson not an inhabitant. Aug. 22, 1872: Lebanon to Coventry. Nelson Barber was never an inhabitant. Jan. 1, 1873: East Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwig Hauerwas, wife and 5 children are on expense. May 30, 1873: Lebanon to Mansfield. John M. Miliken, wife and 3 children are sick and on expense. When they came here there were 4 children, but one of them has died. Nov. 11, 1873: East Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwig Hauerwas and family are asking for help. Dec. 19, 1873: George Champlin, Westerly, R.I., to Selectmen of Lebanon. Said Champlin, formerly of Lebanon, aged 60, can no lomnger support my daughter, Mary J. Champlin, who has been insane for 4 years. My wife has had charge of her for 3 of those years. She is at the Insane Hospital at Middletown, having been put there Oct. 7, 1873. Town must assume her expenses. Dec. 25, 1873: Lebanon to George Champlin. The grandfather of Mary J. Champlin is a man of means and able to support her. Dec. 30, 1873: Lebanon to Milton Hathaway.
