Feb. 23, 1874: Windham to Lebanon. The family of Samuel J. Davis is on expense. Samuel J. Davis, wife Sarah and 5 children: Sarah, about 14; William, about 12; Arthur, about 10; Estella, about 8; Edward, 9 months old. Mar. 23, 1874: Windham to Lebanon. The family of Caleb Corey is on expense. The family consists of Caleb Corey, aged about 42; his wife Lydia, aged about 41; daughter Maria, 13; Lydia Smith (his wife's mother), aged 84. Sept. 1, 1874: Windham to Lebanon. Bill for two families we took care of during the small pox in South Windham last winter. Davis family supported Feb. 11 to Apr. 5; burial of William Davis. Corey family supported Feb. 2 to Mar. 28. Nov. 17, 1874: Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwig Hauerwas, wife and 2 children on expense. Dec. 8, 1874: Lebanon to Windham. J. Davis and family have become inhabitants of the town of Windham, Lydia Smith belongs to the town of Norwich. Caleb Corey, wife and daughter are inhabitants of Lebanon, and we will pay their bill. Dec. 19, 1874: Norwich to Lebanon. Nathan N. Singleton and family are on expense. Apr. 10, 1875: George Champlin, Westerly, R.I., to Selectmen of Lebanon. Am able to do nothing to support my daughter Mary Jane; my wife and I are poor and unwell. Apr. 17, 1875: Lebanon to Milton Hathaway, Suffield, Ct. George Champlin writes that he is unable to support his daughter (your granddaughter), Mary Jane Champlin. You were asked to assume her support and it appears that you did so. I hereby notify you to continue to take care of her. Apr. 19, 1875: George Champlin to Selectmen of Lebanon. Milton Hathaway says that he has no means to support Mary Jane. Apr. 23, 1875: Norwich to Lebanon. The family of William G. Chapman, consisting of his wife Harriet and 2 children (Viola A., aged 10 years, and William, 8 years) are on expense. William G. Chapman has absconded. He is the son of Gurdon Chapman, who had a settlement in Lebanon some 40 years ago. He moved to Bozrah about that time, lived there 3 years, and died. William G., his son, was born there, gained no settlement during his minority, and has not lived 6 years in any town since. May 5, 1875: Lebanon to Norwich. A letter dated at Ledyard Apr. 30, 1842 was sent to the selectmen of Lebanon stating that there was an account in the town of Salem for support and funeral charges of Gurdon Chapman. Lebanon stated at that time that Gurdon Chapman never gained a residence in that town, having lived there only 2 or 3 years. He paid no taxes, was sick, and the town of Salem paid his bill. May 28, 1875: Milton Hathaway, Windsor Locks (through C.B. Hathaway) to Selectmen of Lebanon. I do not see the possibility of my doing anything for the support of my granddaughter, Mary J. Champlin. June 3, 1875: Lebanon to Connecticut Hospital for the Insane, Middletown. Lebanon will assume payments for Mary J. Champlin from this time on. June 4, 1875: Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwig Hauerwas and family are on expense. June 29, 1875: Lebanon to Hartford. We think that Ludwig Haverwas should be able to get along, as his pension has been increased to $24.00 per month. Sept. 27, 1875: Lebanon to Colchester. Stillman P. Kenyon is on expense. Nov. 7, 1875: Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwig Hawerwaus has requested help. Dec. 13, 1875: Hebron to Lebanon. Mary Deming, widow of Nelson Deming (colored), is on expense. Dec. 20, 1875: Lebanon to Hebron. Nelson Deming was never an inhabitant. Jan. 4, 1876: Hartford to Lebanon. Lucy Seymour (colored), wife of Austin Seymour, and her child are on expense. Jan. 15, 1876: Lebanon to Hartford. Lucy Seymour is not an inhabitant and never was. Feb. 26, 1876: Lebanon to Norwich. Mrs. Lydia Smith, widow of Joseph Smith, aged 90, is on expense. May 9, 1876: Lebanon to Norwich. Bill of burial expense of Mrs. Lydia Smith, who died Ap. 29, 1876. Apr. 7, 1876: Columbia to Lebanon. Frank Holbrook is sick and on expense. Oct. 23, 1876: Scotland to Lebanon. Willard Beckwith, his wife Maria, and child Isaac L. Beckwith are destitute. The residence of the above follow the residence of his father, Lemuel Beckwith, a man some 70 years of age, who thinks he was born in your town. Oct. 28, 1876: Lebanon to Scotland. Willard Beckwith is not an inhabitant. Nov. 2, 1876: Coventry to Lebanon. Jared Davenport is on expense. Nov. 8, 1876: Lebanon to Coventry. Jared Davenport is not an inhabitant. Nov. 8, 1876: Colchester to Lebanon. Esther Freeman and daughter and Janett Brewster (all colored) are on expense. Nov. 29, 1876: Lebanon to Colchester. Esther Freeman, her daughter, and Janett Brewster are not inhabitants. Dec. 29, 1876: Salem to Lebanon. Joel Saunders, wife and one child on expense. Jan. 23, 1877: Norwich to Lebanon. Nathan N. Singleton has again called for assistance. Jan. 31, 1877: Hartford to Lebanon. Ludwig Hauerwas, wife and children on expense. Apr. 17, 1877: Joel Saunders has applied for help. Apr. 18, 1877: Colchester to Lebanon. Amasa Hyde and wife on expense. June 14, 1877: Lebanon to Lyme. Francis W. Clark on expense. July 31, 1877: Lebanon to Colchester. Patrick Murphy's wife and 3 children are in destitute circumstances. He has been sent to jail for riotous proceedings. They live in Albert Hoxie's house near Bozrahville. Sept. 3, 1877: Lebanon to Lyme. Bill for 9 weeks board for F.W. Clark. Oct. 22, 1877: Salem to Lebanon. Joel Saunders, his wife and son are on expense. Dec. 22, 1877: Hartford to Lebanon. Henry Hauerwas, his wife Jenny and one child are on expense. Jan. 10, 1878: Memorandum. Received a letter today from Henry Lomax in Norwich requesting aid from the town. Notified Mr. R. Carpenter. Jan. 22, 1878: Memorandum. Received from William A. Butler, stopping with Henry Bliss on Goshen Hill, a letter asking aid. Mr. Butler, as I understand, does not belong in this town but comes from Massachusetts. No date: Memorandum. Received two letters from Dr. Huntington asking pay for services rendered the family of William A. Butler, one dated Dec. 10, 1877 and one dated Dec. 26, 1877. Jan. 24, 1877 (sic): Lebanon to Montville. Mrs. Charles H. Miller, nee Harriet Darrow, is on expense. (Memorandum: daughter of Christopher Darrow) Apr. 12, 1878: Lebanon to Montville. Mrs. Charles H. Miller, formerly Harriet Darrow, still on expense. (Note: Montville paid the bill.) May 28, 1878: Lebanon to Lyme. David Alonzo Clark, son of John D. Clark, is sick and on expense. June 10, 1878: Lebanon to Hartford. Payment of bill for supplies furnished the family of Henry Hauerwas Oct. 7, 1878: Lebanon to Lyme. David A. Clark again on expense; sick Nov. 11, 1878: Lebanon to Colchester. Re Jeanette Brewster, it seems that the decree of divorce released this town from all obligation to support her through her husband's residence. We are willing to pay, however, for her burial and medical expense. Nov. 16, 1878: Colchester to Lebanon. Minnie Frances Murphy, daughter of Patrick and Ann Murphy, aged 2, is on expense.
