Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 18, 2008, 9:35 am Hartford Daily Times, Thurs. May 19, 1870 Death of a Centenarian. Tuesday night there died in Norwich Town, at her own residence, Mrs. Reclina Freeman, a colored lady, aged one hundred and seven years. Mrs. Freeman was born at Southold, L.I., November 10th, 1763, her maiden name being Langdon, and distinctly remembered the evacuation of the place by Washington's troops during the Revolutionary war. From Southhold, while yet a child, she moved to New London, and one hundred years ago was the companion of a young lady of that place. She was in New London when Arnold led the expedition on that city, and remembered the assault on Fort Griswold and the subsequent massacre, though with her family she had at the time left the city. At New London she was married to Anthony Freeman, who died about sixteen years since. While in that city she lived with the family of Robert Allen, the father of Mrs. Thomas Williams, of New London, and afterward removing to Plainfield, had the care of Major Thomas Williams and General William Williams while they were at school in that city. From New London she removed to Montville, living there about thirty-five years ago, where she purchased the house in which she died. She was the mother of nine children, only three of whom survive her, the youngest being about seventy years old. Mrs. Freeman was probably the oldest person in the State. Her remains will be taken to Montville today for interment. --Norwich Bulletin.
