Norman married Hannah Mary Stark (born on April 30, 1931, the daughter of William Russell Stark & Florence Ruth Watrous) in Groton, New London, Connecticut. Their children are Norman, William, Phillip, Nancy, Sandra, John, Ruth & Christian. Norman William Oates served honorably in the United States Army 762nd Military Police Battalion. Norman William Oates was awarded the WWII Victory Medal. Norman William Oates was cremated in Scituate, Rhode Island and his son Christian Oates spread his ashes on the burial site with Norman's wife Hannah Mary Stark (Oates) at the Ledyard Union Cemetery.
