Benson Jr. Peter E. Benson Jr., 86, of Manchester, husband of the late Ann (Marzelli) Benson, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Brighton, Mass., son of the late Peter E. and Mary (O'Leary) Benson, and had been a Manchester resident since 1957. Mr. Benson was a 30-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was part of the initial landing on Guadalcanal as a platoon sergeant with Edson's 1st Raider Battalion. Mr. Benson was the boxing coach for the Camp Lejeune boxing team and won the All Service Boxing Championship in 1956. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, the Army & Navy Club of Manchester, the VFW Anderson Shea Post 2046, and the DAV. Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps Mr. Benson went to work for the state of Connecticut as a veterans employment representative and retired in 1981. He is survived by four children, Mary Ann Eaton and her husband, James, of Oak Harbor, Wash., Peter E. Benson and his wife, Dominique, of Montclair, N.J., Dana B. Holland and her husband, Andrew, of New Hartford, N.Y., and Paul E. Benson and his wife, Cheryl, of Colchester; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Benson was predeceased by a brother, Robert Benson, and a sister, Rita Benson. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, in New St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Bridgewater, Mass. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester.
