Gwiazda Henry E. "Swifty" Gwiazda, 77, of Enfield, joined his beloved wife, Ann (Geary), in eternal rest on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, surrounded by his loving family at his home. Swifty was born and raised in Tariffville and moved to Enfield more than 45 years ago, making his home on Locke Drive, and more recently on Pioneer Drive. A meat cutter by trade, he retired from the First National Stores and later Edwards Supermarket. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church since its inception. He was also active in Holy Family Men's Club and Thursday morning golf league. Swifty was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a former member of the Enfield Knights of Columbus Council 50. An avid golfer, he found time to coach Little League baseball and women's softball in Enfield. He also enjoyed collecting sports cards and memorabilia. He is survived by his son, Thomas and his wife, Cathy; his daughters, Patricia West and her husband, Jeff, Mary Senatore and her husband, Dave, all of Enfield, and Nancy Hammond of Glastonbury; his brother, Harry (Chet) Gwiazda of California; his sister, Florence Matczak of Tariffville; his grandchildren, Kari, Shelly, and Jesse West, and Dylan and Christina Gwiazda, all of whom filled him with pride. The son of the late Joseph and Victoria (Popielek) Gwiazda, he was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Gwiazda, Jean Plona, Freda Matczak, and Marie Gosselin, and his son-in-law, Gary Hammond. Swifty will be remembered by many friends and relatives whom he held so special and dear to his heart. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 9:15 a.m. Friday, April 20, at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, for a procession to Holy Family Church, Simon Road, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in St. Patrick King Street Cemetery, Enfield. His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the funeral home.
