Gagne James F. Gagne, 63, of Middle Street, Bath, Maine, died Monday, April 16, at MidCoast Hospital, Brunswick, Maine, following a long illness. He was born in Bath, the son of Napoleon H. and Evelyn M. Cothran Gagne, and attended local schools there. James also served in the U.S. Army for two years. In 1970, he married his wife of 31 years, Dianne Staples, and they moved to Manchester, where they made their home for many years. Mr. Gagne was employed by Colt Firearms for several years as a machine operator, until failing health forced him to get done. Upon returning to the Bath area, James enjoyed playing golf, cribbage, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also an active member of Bath Lodge of Elks. Mr. Gagne is survived by his wife, Dianne Staples Gagne of Bath; a daughter, Patricia Gagne of Connecticut; four grandchildren, Robert and Joshua Adams, and Jeffery and Amanda Pete, all of Connecticut; four stepchildren, Janet Whorff of Bath, and Donald, Thomas, and Daniel Whorff, all of Connecticut; three brothers, Gerald Gagne of Bath, Leonce Gagne of Topsham, Maine, and Napoleon Gagne Jr. of Bath; two sisters, Arlene Munsey of Brunswick and Eleanor Irish of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gagne was predeceased by a sister, Florence Whalen, and a brother, Richard E. Gagne. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath, with the Rev. Andrew Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Bailey's Cemetery, Woolwich, Maine. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 18, at the funeral home.
