Hohs Shirley A. Hohs, 71, of Vernon, beloved wife of 53 years to Arthur Hohs, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2001, after a relentless battle with cancer. Born in Stonington, she had lived in Vernon the past 42 years. Shirley was well-known in Vernon during the 1970s, when she became one of the first uniformed crossing guards. Her greatest love in life was spending time with her family, especially taking trips to Florida in their motor home or just down to the shore. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and she will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. Besides her beloved husband, she leaves her daughter, Robin K. Hohs of Vernon and her very close friend, David R. Tomko; a sister, Betty McComb and her husband, Andrew of Hillsboro, N.H.; a very special friend, Pauline DiPinto, who was an inspiration to her, especially in her difficult times with her illness; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley also leaves behind her grandpuppies, Thunder and Lightning, who she had great delight in being with. She was predeceased by a son, Wayne A. Hohs; a s well as her mother, Hazel Wood of Storrs. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Ladd-Turkington Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road, Route 83, Vernon. Those who wish to express thoughts about Shirley will be able to do so prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Ellington Center Cemetery, Ellington, following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that a plant or flower be planted somewhere so that those who knew Shirley will see it grow each year in her memory. *********************************************** Copyright.
