John D. Hughes The Rev. John D. Hughes, 85, of Bolton, beloved husband for 46 years of Helen S. (Slade) Hughes, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Rockville General Hospital. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Aug. 9, 1915, he attended Youngstown schools and graduated from Kenyon College and Bexley Hall Seminary, both in Gambier, Ohio. Rev. Hughes was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and had been a Bolton resident since 1966. He was an active Episcopal clergy member at St. Mary Episcopal Church in Manchester from 1961 to 1967 and became an interim priest for the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut from 1967 until his death. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with Manchester Lodge 73 AF&AM and also was a member of the Royal Arch Masons. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Cynthia Southern of Charlestown, R.I., and Mary and Rob Wright of Coventry; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William Hughes of Bolton and John and Kathy Hughes of Manchester; six grandchildren, Corinne E. Southern, Erik and Karl Wright, Brittany and Jenna Hughes, and Brendan Hughes; a brother, Willard Hughes of Canfield, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 30, at St. George Episcopal Church, 1150 Boston Turnpike (Route 6 and 44), Bolton, with the Rt. Rev. Andrew D. Smith, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, officiating. Burial will follow in Bolton Center Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Watkins Funeral Home, 142 E.
