TITLE: Stephen Kaplan, Obituary, April 22, 2001 SUBMITTERS: Journal Inquirer Manchester,CT (issue Apr 26, 2001) FORMATTED: ABishop, Apr 2001 ***************************************************************************** Stephen Kaplan Stephen Kaplan, 86, of East Street North, Suffield, entered into eternal peace Sunday, April 22, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford. Stephen was born in Holyoke, Mass., the son of the late John and Bertha (Piskor) Kaplan, and was a Suffield resident for 80 years. Formerly employed by Fuller Brush Co. as a superintendent for grounds maintenance for 20 years and also formerly employed by Suffield Country Club as groundskeeper for 15 years, he retired in 1985. Stephen was a member of St. Adalbert Church, Enfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant with the engineer corps in the European Campaign. He was a member of the VFW, Suffield, and of Suffield Country Club. He was an avid and well-known golfer in the surrounding area. He received the Suffield Country Club President's Cup in 1951 and 1989. He was a Suffield Country Club Champion in 1955, 1956, 1965, and 1969. He was honored by playing two years in the Insurance Companies Open. In his career, he recorded four holes-in-one. He was an avid reader and an animal lover. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and John Lewis of Windsor Locks; a sister and brother-in-law, Veronica and Anthony Wassil of Berlin; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Rose Kaplan of Enfield; a sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Stanley Sojkowski of Enfield; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Anna Kaplan of Enfield; brother and sister-in-law, Bruno and Vickey Kaplan of Suffield; and a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Cynthia Kaplan of Somersville. He also is survived by his aunts, Mary "Mamie" Kaplan and Rita Kaplan; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Katherine Przybycien, in 1976, and also predeceased by his second wife, Helen Calloway, in 1998. The funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 26, from Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield (Exit 48 off I-91, east on Route 220 for 1¼ miles) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Adalbert Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at the funeral home.
