Mathiason, 75, of Manchester, husband of the late Jean M. (Johnston) Mathiason, who predeceased him this past January, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at the home of his daughter in Vernon, after a courageous battle against cancer. Born in Manchester June 29, 1925, son of the late Oscar and Martha (Wagner) Mathiason, he was a lifelong Manchester resident. Russ was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Prior to retiring in 1990 he had been employed by the State of Connecticut at Howell Cheney Technical School for 20 years. He was a member and past president of the Army-Navy Club of Manchester, and a member of the Zipser Club and the former Manchester Rod and Gun Club. He will be remembered for his arranging of bus trips ("If you need a bus, call Russ.") and his enjoyment of deep-sea fishing. He is survived by two daughters, Carol Clark of Manchester, and Pat Sycz and her husband, Larry, of Vernon; a son, Dale Mathiason and his wife, Lynn, of Manchester; four grandchildren, Matt Clark, Kevin Sycz, Kim Sycz, and Joe Mathiason; his brother and sister, Harry Mathiason and Laura Fish, both of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a sister, June Fuller. Graveside services for both he and his wife will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, in East Cemetery (Div. G, Westminster Section), Manchester. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester.
