She was the beloved wife of William A. Mertens and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in November. Laura was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Manchester, daughter of the late John and Frieda (Gutzmer) Murdock, and was raised in Manchester, graduating from Manchester High School. She had been a Coventry resident since the early 1950s and moved to Vernon last year. Prior to retiring in the late 1970s, Laura had been employed by the former Manchester Water Company for many years. She was a member of Second Congregational Church of Coventry and the former Independent Order of Odd Fellows Rebekah Lodge of Manchester. Besides her husband, she is survived by a brother, Richard Murdock of Coventry. She was a very loving and attentive aunt to her 10 nieces and nephews and 15 grandnieces and grandnephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at Watkins Funeral Home, 142 E. Center St., Manchester, with burial to follow in East Cemetery, Manchester. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the funeral home.
