Oefinger, 78, of Newington, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Middlesex Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Gertrude (Ehrhardt) Oefinger. Mr. Oefinger retired in 1986 as treasurer and as a vice president of Middlesex Mutual Assurance Co. after 21 years of employment. Born in Greenwich, son of the late Fred R. and May J. (Molokas) Oefinger, he grew up in Southington and was a Newington resident for the past 46 years. Mr. Oefinger graduated from Lewis High School, Southington, where he was president of the senior class and starred in track. He ran on a record-breaking relay team in the 1939 state championship held in the Yale Bowl. He graduated from Morse College, Hartford. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater, where he served with the 1st Combat Cargo Group. Mr. Oefinger was a member of the Society of Insurance Accountants and the Administrative Management Society. He served on the board of directors of the Middletown Industrial Development Corp. He was also a member of St. Mary Church, Newington, American Legion Post 0117, VFW Post 15007, and the CT Yankee BASHA C.B.I. VA. A devoted father, he leaves his daughter, Mary-Jane Oefinger of Vernon; his son, Mark R. Oefinger of Groton; and a dear family friend, Barbara Nagy of Groton. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 16, at Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Newington. Interment with military honors will be in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. Relatives and friends are invited from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 16, at the funeral home.
