(Chretien) Durn Pollack, 79, of Vernon, widow of William H. Durn Sr. and Joseph J. Pollack, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Rockville General Hospital. She was born October 25, 1923, in Biddeford, ME, daughter of the late Henry and Armenia (Lord) Chretien, and had resided in Vernon for 47 years. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Pollack operated a coffee shop in Manchester, was a baker and icer of a bakery shop, was inventory supervisor and sales clerk at 3D Bed & Bath of East Hartford, and assisted her daughter in her business. Mrs. Pollack was a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Vernon. She served as a Den Mother in 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Pollack was a member for 46 years in the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. She ran and operated the Bingo concession in the East Hartford Auxiliary and was honored with a plaque from the West Hartford Auxiliary for making over 100 lap robes for the hospitalized veterans in Rocky Hill and local convalescent homes. Mrs. Pollack enjoyed reading and was an avid walker who could be seen daily during the '80s & '90s walking her two dogs: "Sir Charles," a Cairn Terrier & "Scotty McGregor," a West Highland Terrier. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra M. Durn of Vernon and her close friend, John D. Kane; a son, William H. Durn Jr. and his wife, Teresa, of Graham, NC; two grandsons, Brian W. Durn of Graham, NC, and Joseph Gomber and his wife, Christina; and a niece, Barbara Gomber, all of New Jersey. Her brother, Henry Chretien and his wife, Helen, of Oakford, PA; a brother-in-law, Alfred Lemire Sr. of Tolland; her sister-in-law, Angela Lemire and her friend, Walter Brown, both of Tolland; a special cousin and neighbor, David Gormley of Vernon; a very special friend, Charles M. Maurer of Vernon; her next-door neighbors of 46 years, Richard and Margaret Daniels of Vernon; and her 2nd son, John Dumaine of Talcottville who came to reside with the Durn family and whom she raised through high school. She was predeceased by a dear cousin, Eulia Landon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, April 4, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 550 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Manchester, at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be Thursday April 3, 6 to 9 p.m., at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. There will be a VFW Auxiliary Service Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
