Col. Gene J. Richards, 63, of Enfield, entered into his eternal rest, surrounded by his loving family at his residence on Wednesday, April 2, 2003. Gene maintained his sense of humor throughout his long and difficult illness. Born on Sept. 13, 1939, in Hartford, he was the son of the late Manville F. and M. Mary (Lorrain) Richards. He earned his B.S. in Business Adminstration from UCONN in 1976 and furthered his education at the Command and General Staff College in 1985. He was employed for thirty-five years as a Computer Security Administration Manager with Pratt and Whitney, retiring in 1995. He served in the Connecticut Army National Guard from 1960-1993, most recently as their Defense Movement Coordinator. Gene has resided in Enfield since 1955 and was a communicant of Holy Family Church. He was a member of the 169th Infantry Veterans Corps in New Britain and an avid UCONN Huskies fan. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty-two years, Carolyn (Tanguay) Richards; his family, Laurel and Alan Kendzior and their son, Michael, of Enfield; Brenda and Norman Quesnel and their sons, Benjamin and Stephen, of Broad Brook; Jeffrey M. and Heather Richards and their children, Curtis, Samantha, Zachary, and Caroline of Enfield; Brian C. and Michelle Richards and their sons, Noah, Seth, and Luke of Manchester; his sister Virginia M. Disbro of Suffield; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services with military honors will be held for Lt. Col. Richards on Saturday, April 5, 2003, with a procession at 10:45 a.m. from the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church, 23 Simon Road, Enfield. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
