TITLE: Herman Lawson Sparks Sr., Obituary, May 27, 2001 SUBMITTERS: Journal Inquirer Manchester,CT (issue May 30, 2001) FORMATTED: ABishop, June 2001 ***************************************************************************** SPARKS Herman Lawson Sparks Sr., 78, of East Hartford, husband of Adrienne (Zebedeo) Sparks, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Hartford Hospital. Herman was born in Bartholomew, Ind., on Sept. 10, 1922, son of the late Elijah and Grace (Shroyer) Sparks, and had been a resident of East Hartford since 1943. Herman joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 17 and worked in Shortcreek, Ariz., then moving to Hurricane, Utah, and finally Henryville, Ind. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Herman served in combat in the German Theater. Following the war, he went to work for the town of East Hartford for six years. Following his job with the town of East Hartford, Herman went to work for the U.S. Post Office, a position he held for 28 years, retiring in 1979 as a supervisor from the Weston Street, Hartford, branch. After he retired, he went to work for Day, Berry, and Howard law firm in Hartford, working in the mailroom for 12½ years, finally retiring in 1993. Herman was a communicant of St. Mary Church, East Hartford. Besides his beloved wife of 55 years, Herman is survived by his eight children and their spouses, Herman L. "Butch" Jr. and Linda Sparks of Douglasville, Ga., Donald L. and Irene Sparks of Marlborough, Elizabeth Grace and Michael Piccarillo of Old Saybrook, Thomas L. and Rhonda Sparks of Virginia Beach, Va., Patrick L. Sparks of East Hartford, Stephen L. Sparks of East Hartford, Judith Ann Sparks of Simsbury, Christopher L. Sparks of East Hartford; one brother, Cleo Carol Sparks of Columbus, Ind.; two sisters, Zelma Edelle Graham of Columbus, and Velma Florence Arthur of Columbus; 13 grandchildren, Kristen, Amanda, Andrew, Sarah, Aubrey, "T.J.", Charlene, Samantha, Cara Jo, Stephen, Shawn, Margo, Greg; one great-grandchild, "Ki Ki"; a brother-in-law, A. Michael Zebedeo and his wife, Mary, of East Hartford; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Herman was predeceased by one brother, Daniel Leroy Sparks; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Mary and Arthur Davieau. The funeral service will be held at 8:15 a.m. Friday, June 1, from the Benjamin J. Callahan Funeral Home, 1602 Main St., East Hartford, followed by a Requiem Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 1584 Main St., East Hartford. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, East Hartford.
