Stringfellow, 79, of Manchester, husband of the late Gladys (Stevens) Stringfellow, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Hartford Hospital. Born Jan. 22, 1922, in Meridian, Miss., son of the late John E. Sr. and Bertha Lee (Hogan) Stringfellow, he had been a resident of Manchester for over 36 years. Mr. Stringfellow was a career U.S. Army veteran and retired as master sergeant after 25 years of service to his country. He later worked for the state Department of Correction for over 20 years. Mr. Stringfellow was a member and former lay reader at St. Mary Episcopal Church, Manchester. Mr. Stringfellow was a member of the Army & Navy Club, and for 30 years was an umpire for the Manchester Little League. He is survived by two sons, Thomas L. Stringfellow of Manchester and S. Kent Stringfellow of Fairfax, Va.; five sisters, Berdia Mae Reed, Queen Esther Harper, Hattie Roberts, and Betty Jean Gaddis, all of Meridian, and Mary E. Ford of St. Paul, Minn.; three brothers, John E. Stringfellow Jr. of Tacoma, Wash., and Henry O. Stringfellow and John Henry Stringfellow, both of Meridian; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Grant of Devonshire, Bermuda; and numerous nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice DeLois Stringfellow and Mamie Carrie Lee Dukes. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, at St. Mary Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester. Burial will follow with full military honors in the Hillstown Road Veterans Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday, June 1, at the church. Holmes Funeral Home, Manchester, has care of the arrangements.
