Schwartz, 78, of 111 Milton Drive, husband of Frances (Leonard) Schwartz, died suddenly Thursday afternoon, May 3, 2001. Born in Meriden on June 2, 1922, the son of the late Selig and Tillie (Derecktor) Schwartz, he resided in Meriden his entire life. He attended local schools and graduated from Cheshire Academy and the University of Connecticut. Mr. Schwartz was owner and operator of his own insurance and real estate agency for a number of years, eventually merging with the Squire Insurance Agency in 1968, where he was still employed. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Fluent in German, he was involved in post-war military government in Germany. He was a member of Congregation B'Nai Abraham. Mr. Schwartz was a member of the following: Salvation Army, serving on its board for more than 55 years; past president of Temple B'Nai Abraham; Meridian Lodge 77; Probus Club; and Kiwanis. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Luna of Guilford, Mary Ann LaChapelle of New Hampshire, and Shelley Haslett of Manchester; one son, Lewis G. Schwartz of Stamford; seven grandchildren; a brother, Richard D. Schwartz of Fayetteville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Levine of Long Boat Key, Fla. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 6, at Temple B'Nai Abraham, 127 E. Main St., Meriden, with Rabbi Gloria S. Rubin officiating. Burial will be in B'Nai Abraham Cemetery. The period of mourning will be held at his late residence, 111 Milton Drive, Meriden, Sunday through Tuesday, May 8. Arrangements are under the direction of John J. Ferry & Sons, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
