Valente, 88, went to eternal rest on Thursday, April 3, 2003. He was the beloved husband of the late Louise (Stavens) Valente and father of the late Bonnie-Jean Valente Douglas. He was born in Hartford, on June 23, 1914, to the late Alphonse & Angelina Valente. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Valente Cole and her husband, John, and their two daughters, Taryn & Elizabeth, and son, Jeffrey; grandson, David P. Smith and granddaughter, Robyn L. Klouse; sister, Anita Eichner and her husband, Frank, of Storrs, her son, David Eichner, her daughters, Brenda Ballard & Debra Millette, sister, Laura Fontanello of San Francisco, Calif., and her two sons, Michael & Anthony, three daughters, Terry, Gloria, and Janet; brother, Henry Valente, of Malakoff, Texas; sister-in-law, Dot Mayo, of West Suffield, and her two daughters Pam & Marsha, and son Scott; son-in-law, Bill Douglas; and special friend, Muriel Smith. Our dear friend Bill was very active in the town of Manchester, especially the Senior Center. He was elected "Mr. Senior Citizen' in 1976. He volunteered at the Senior Center as painter, vegetable garden coordinator, and bus trip coordinator. He and his beloved wife, Louise, enjoyed numerous Senior Center bus trips together. They also traveled extensively for Geissler's Supermarkets. They enjoyed these trips immensely. At the Senior Center he was active in the pool and bocci tournaments. He also loved to play cards with his many friends. Most of all, he was a wonderful husband, father, and dear friend. We will miss him dearly. Bill worked as a foreman at Colt's Firearms in Hartford during WWII. He also worked at the First National, owned his own grocery store, "Valente's," formerly at 316 Center St., in Manchester, and managed the Geissler's Supermarket at Warehouse Pt., Windsor Locks, prior to retirement in 1976. Bill was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Manchester. He was also a member of the Manchester ELKS Club for 51 years. He was a real fan of the UCONN men's & women's basketball teams. Calling hours will be on Sunday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Funeral services will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, 40 Pitkin St., Manchester, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at East Cemetery, Manchester.
