Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 17, 2008, 6:56 pm Town poor mentioned in Tolland, Town Meetings, 1788-1800: Feb. 26, 1788: Town chose agents to oppose the Town of Willington in an action it has commenced against Tolland for the maintenance of Benjamin Weaver and his family. Apr. 24, 1788: Selectmen are directed to assist Elizabeth Crandall, a poor person who is blind to her sight, by employing a physician, etc. Jan. 24, 1791: Selectmen are directed to look into the circumstances of Mr. Peter Spencer and his wife and to see if they belong to this town or to Ashford or any other town or to the heirs of said Peter Spencer. Jan. 12, 1792: Elkana Barton is to be allowed to remain in this town without being removed. Apr. 13, 1795: Selectmen are directed to commence any suit or suits that may be necessary to recover the cost and expenses of supporting Cuff and Phyllis, Negroes formerly belonging to Joseph Kingsbury, late of Norwich, deceased. Sept. 19, 1796: Selectmen are directed to find the legal place of residence of the family of Russell Edwards, which family now resides in the town at expense, and to commence a lawsuit against Stafford or any other town necessary. Dec. 8, 1800: Town to sue any town necessary for the maintenance of Sarah Hull, now residing in Tolland, and also for the support of Cuff Kingsbury, so- called, lately deceased, and for the support of Phyllis, widow of said Cuff.
