Adzima Jr., 71, of Ellington, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, after a long and courageous struggle with congestive heart failure. A native of Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Edward S. and Elizabeth (Knapik) Adzima. Mr. Adzima attended schools in Meriden, and received his bachelor of science degree from the University of North Dakota, where he was a letterman and member of Phi Delta Theta and Gamma Theta Upsilon Fraternities. He received his master's degree from the University of Hartford and his sixth year certificate from the University of Connecticut. Mr. Adzima also did advanced study of Revolutionary China and Revolutionary Russia, at Oregon State University, under a federal grant, and was also a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve. He taught at the Leland and Gray Seminary in Townshend, Vt., and the Towpath School in Avon before moving to Ellington. Mr. Adzima was a social studies teacher at Longview School and Ellington High School for 31 years where he served as trainer for various athletic teams, class advisor and advisor for the Robert W. Murphy Honor Society for many years. He was one of the original drivers for the Ellington Volunteer Ambulance. A former president of the Ellington Education Association, and Personnel Policies chairman, he was chief negotiator for the town's teachers for many years and oversaw the drawing up of the teacher's first written contract here. Mr. Adzima served as chairman of the Ellington Economic Development Commission for many years, he was a founding member of the Church of St. Luke and the Ellington Historical Society, and he was a member of the Friends of Hall Memorial Library and the Army-Navy Club of Manchester. A well-known umpire of baseball and softball in school and industrial leagues, as well as the Nutmeg State Games, Mr. Adzima also served as president of the Manchester League of Baseball Umpires. Throughout his professional teaching career, he was a member of numerous educational associations, especially the National Education Association, the Connecticut Education Association, the Ellington Education Association, and the Social Studies Teachers Group. Edward is survived by his wife of 44 ½ years, C. Roberta (Hanlon) Adzima, his son, Edward P. Adzima of Ellington; his daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Robert Tobin of Granby; his beloved grandchildren, Sean Michaelangelo Tobin and Colleen Erin Tobin; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Gwen (Miller) Adzima of Ashford; and a number of beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Ladd-Turkington Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road, (Route 83), Vernon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernard Church, St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville, at noon. Burial will be in Ellington Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the St. Bernard Church Hall, Rockville, following the burial. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 21, at the funeral home.
