Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 97616, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office. I appears from the Rolls on file in this Office, that James Keneley was enrolled on the 19th day of Jany, 1864, at Ft. Trumbull Ct. in Co. G, 10th Regiment of Conn Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 19th day of Jany 1864, at Fr. Trumbull, Ct., in Co G, 10th Regiment of Conn Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. G, of that Regiment, for the months of March & April 1865, he is reported “Killed in action near Petersburg Va April 2 1865” I am Sir, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, Sam. Brief in the case of Margaret Keneley, Mother of James Keneley a private in Co. G 10th Conn. Vols., resident of Windham County and State of Conn DECLARATION AND INDENTIFICATION IN DUE FORM. PROOF EXHIBITED. Service. Adjt. Genl reports enrollment and mustered as a private Jany 19th 1864 Death. Killed in action near Petersburg Va., April 2, 1865 Celibacy of Soldier. and Relationship. Death or disability of husband. Shown by affidavit of two credible witnesses also that the Husband deserted his family 4 years since (believe to have gone to Ireland,) that he has ---- been heard from since. That applicant has no property whatever or other means of support, before he went to the war he worked out and gave her his wages, that after enlistment he gave her his bounty $280, also sent her a part of his wages to the amount of $150. And I further certify that I am well acquainted with the hand-writing of the said and verily believe the foregoing signature purporting to be his is genuine. Mothers’ Army Pension State of Connecticut SS County of Windham On this 20 day of May A. D. 1865, personally appeared before Judge of the Court of Probate for the District of Windham Margaret Keneley resident of Windham in the County of Windham and State of Connecticut aged 45 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by Act of Congress, approved July 14th, 1862, that she is the wife of Mathew Keneley whom she lives and mother of James Keneley who was a private in Company G commanded by Capt Benj L Graves in the 10th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers in the War of 1864, who was killed in the assault upon Fort Gregg on the Second day of April 1865, by a shot through the heart. The - ---- Keneley deserted her on or about the 1st day of August 1861, & has ever since co-t----e his desertion & he has not contributed anything towards her support and that she is now without means of support & in feeble health. The father declares that her said son, upon whom she was wholly dependent for support, having left no widow or minor children under sixteen years of age surviving, declarant makes this application for a pension under the above mentioned act, and refers to the evidence filed herewith, and that in the paper. Department to establish her claim. She also declares that she has not, in any way, been engaged in or aided or abetted the rebellion in the United States; that also she is not in the receipt of a pension under the 2d section of the act above mentioned, or under any other act, nor has she again married since the death her son, the said James Kenely Margaret Kenely Claimant. Also personally appeared Merrick Johnson and A.W. Dexter residents of Windham Connecticut persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw her Margaret Kenely to the foregoing declaration; and they further swear that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be. Dexter residents of the Town and County of Windham State of Connecticut on oath say that we know Mrs. Margaret Kenealy mother of James Keneally died, late private Co G 10 C. V. she was deserted by her husband four years since her chief means of support was what she received from her son James aforesaid. He sent her most of his money while he was in the war. We have been with her to the -----y office where she has taken out money from it that was sent her by her son. She is entirely without means of support, having no property & in feeble health we further say that we are disinterested in this claim Merrick Johnson A.W. William Swift Judge of Probate For the District of windham the same Being a Count of second We John Hailey and James Hailey both of the Town and County of Windham State of Connecticut do certify and say that we know Margaret Keneally of said Windham the mother of James Keneally who was a private Company G 10th Conn Vols. We also knew Mathew Keneally the husband of the said Margaret and the father of the said James he deserted his wife (the said Margaret) about four years since has not since been heard from though we believe he went Ireland, he has not supported or contributed to her support since that time. The said James was her principal support, before he went to the war, he worked out, and save his wages to his mother, when he enlisted he had a bounty of two hundred & eighty dollars, which he gave to his mother. Since he went to the war he has sent most of his wages to her. We positively know that he has sent her of his own wages. While he has been in the war cash to the amount of 150 dollars. We believe he has sent her more than that amount, the said Margaret has not means of support, and is in feeble health, she has no property whatever. We were present and witnessed her marriage of the said Mathew Keneally and the said Margaret Keneally, the same took place at Classmore, Waterford, Ireland about the year 1844. We do not swear to the precise date but trusts the above is correct The ceremony was performed by Rev Father Pursev who is now dead and we do not believe that there is any record of such marriage acceptable, we have not interest in this claim Subscribed in presence of John Hailey James Hailey Merrick Johnson A.
