DAR microfilms. Col Macomb was a D.C. resident for a while and this letter is from the Gov. of NY State. Hope you enjoy.....there are 3 p.s.'s Albany Jany. 20, 1814 Col. Macomb. Dear Sir: Unless Madame Rose should come up immediately, the whole object of my engaging her will be lost, namely to take charge of my chldren during the Winter, when our other concerns deprive us of that power. Therefore, should Madame Rose decline coming up immediately I will thank you to notify her that any engagement on my part must be considered at an end. I am sorry you did not tell me at first she was ugly, for you know I have great repugnance to any faces more ugly than my own. But my taste and opinion of beauty differs from yours and I shall not trust you 'till I see and judge for myself in that respect. Lamb returned last night. All is quiet on the Niagara frontier. Your with regard, Daniel D. Tompkins. The Governor of New York State. P.S.Respect to Mrs. Macomb. Mrs T. is confined to her bed and has been for 6 days with inflamatory Rheumatism. Please to see Griffen before you come and charge him to write oftener. P.S. Ducks are infernally scarce here. Genl. Wilkerson dined with me to day and I gave him a tolerable dinner without them. Bring with you 100 Canvass backs if you please, but if you cannot get canvass-backs bring other-at all events bring ducks. Some fresh oysters in or out of shell will be equally acceptable- say 500 to 1000. D.D.T. P.S. Junior - If you charter a sleigh for Madame Rose, yourself ducks and oysters you know my character & will duly appreciate the consequences. DDT a second time
