A runaway accident occurred yesterday afternoon, which resulted in the death of Mrs. Ann Hessler, a market woman. Mrs. Hessler had been at the O street market, and, not having sold all her produce, was on her way to the K street market, where she expected to dispose of it. The horse ran away shortly after reaching Sixth and N streets and ran down N street. Mrs. Hessler tried to hold on to the reins, but when the corner of K street was reached she jumped just as the wagon overturned. Her skull was fractured and by the time medical aid reached her she was dead. The body was removed to the morgue and her husband, who has a truck garden on the Brentwood road, notified. One of the horse’s legs was broken and the wagon demolished. The Coffin Fell in on Him. A throng of mourners stood around an open grave in Calvary Cemetery Tuesday afternoon sadly watching four gravediggers preparing to lower a coffin containing the body of Mrs. Bridget Brazill, who had died at 78 Freeman street, Greenpoint. Suddenly, and without any warning, the earth about the grave caved in. John Scanlon, one of the gravediggers, fell foremost into the grave and the coffin on top of him. The other three gravediggers fell on the coffin. A panic ensued among the mourners. Several women fainted, and the daughter of the dead woman went into hysterics. Help finally arrived, and Scanlon was extricated from his perilous position. The burial then progressed without further accident. Christina C. Ballantyne Dead. Mr. William Ballantyne, the well-known bookseller and stationer and philanthropic gentleman, will have the sympathy of his host of friends in the loss that he has sustained in the death of his beloved wife, Mrs. Christina Cairns Ballantyne, which occurred last Friday at the family residence, No. 1328 Vermont avenue. Her health had been delicate for years and only by the exercise of the greatest care and attention had she been able to temporarily conquor disease and mingle with her family. There were occasional “well spells” that gave hope to husband and children, but bad charges only too quickly following brought discouragement. Not long since she experienced a partial stroke of paralysis, and this added to her already frail health, made recovery appear impossible. Her condition continued to grow worse until death intervened. The deceased was a most estimable lady, loving wife, and devoted mother, and she will indeed be missed both in the home and elsewhere. She leaves a husband, two sons, and a daughter, the latter married. Mrs. Ballantyne was of a quiet, retired disposition, but filled with generosity and charity. She did much noble and Christian work in and out of the church for which she never received just recognition, because the world was kept in darkness as to the author. A more loving and happier family could not be found, and her taken off will prove a terrible affliction, one the effects of which are likely to continue for years to come. The funeral will take place at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon.
