The Petition of Rhoda Lewis widow and Admr. Of Mark Lewis Late of duck creek Hundred in the County afsd. dec. Respectfully Represents that the said Mark Lewis died seized with a Personal Estate Amounting to About Two Hundred Pounds after the Payment of his debts, and of a Certain Lott of ground and Improvements thereon Sittuate in Lewis Xroads otherways called grog town, worth about fifteen Pounds per Annum (Subject to the widows dower) having issue John, Lydia, Sarah, Mary, and Mark Lewis, who are all under the age of fourteen years, who are Equally Interested in the aforesaid property and that no Guardian Hath been Appointed for said Minors. Your Petitioner therefore Prays your Honours to Appoint her the Guardian for the Afsd. John [crossed out, Mary and Mark written above], Lewis Untill he may arrive to the age of fourteen years . ******************************************************************************* [Other papers show that Charles Numbers was appointed guardian to Mary and Mark Lewis; John Ringgold appointed guardian to John, Lydia and Sarah Lewis.] ******************************************************************************* To the Honorable Nicholas Ridgely Chancellor of the State of Delaware now sitting(?) as Judge of the Orphans Court for Kent County. The Petition of John Lewis eldest Son of Mark Lewis late of said County decd, Respectfully sheweth That the said Mark Lewis in his life time and at the time of his death was seized in for of and in a House and lot of ground containing about one acre and half situate in the village of Kenton in Said County and being so thereof seized died intestate left to survive him a widow who has since died and five children namely John your Petitioner Lydia Lewis, Sarah Lewis, Mary Lewis and Mark Lewis his children and heirs at Law among whom partition of the premises remains to be made in equal shares, the said Mark Lewis having died since the 29th Jany 1794. We therefore pray your Honor to appoint five freeholders to go upon view an dif the same will admit thereof divide the Land premises among the Several heirs and legal representatives of said Mark Lewis agreeably to the intestate laws of the State. And your Petitioner, February 24th 1809, John Lewis *************************************************** To the Honourable the Orphans’ Court of the State of Delaware, now sitting at Dover, in and for the County of Kent, this fourteenth day of August in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and eighteen. The Petition of Mark Lewis a minor son of Mark Lewis & Rhoda his wife Humbly sheweth, that the said Rhoda Lewis was owner at the time of her death of certain real estate, situation in Duck Creek hundred in the said county of Kent, which will yield an annual rent of about forty dollars one half of which rents is the Right of your petitioner and in all the property which he is at present entitled to that he is now upwards of fourteen years of age and wishes to make choice of a Guardian. He therefore prays your Honour to appoint Jonathan Homested(?) to be his guardian. ************************************************************************ To Nicholas Ridgely Esquire Chancellor of the State of Delaware Composing the Orphans Court in and for Kent County. The Petition of Benjamin Graham and Mary his wife which said Mary is one of the children of Mark Lewis and Rhoda his wife late Rhoda Numbers one of the children of John Numbers formerly of Duck Creek Hundred deceased. Respectfully Represents That the lands and premises of the said John Numbers deceased by proceedings had under an order of the Orphans Court of this County, have been distributed or divided among his widow and children or their legal Representatives, that is said distribution or division there was one hundred & eighty five acres & (?) square perches laid off to Mary Numbers widow of the said John Numbers as her thirds or dower for life in said lands and premises and that of the residue of the Real Estate of the said John Numbers decd. there was laid off to the said Rhoda Numbers in two separate pieces Eighty nine acres and Eighty Eight square perches, that the said Rhoda afterwards married Mark Lewis and had by him two children viz Mary now the the wife of Benjamin Graham your petitioner, and Mark Lewis, that the said Rhoda survived her said husband and soon afterwards departed this life by the name of Rhoda Lewis, leaving to survive her the said Mary now the wife of Benjamin Graham your petitioner, and Mark Lewis, her only children, that after the death of the said Rhoda Lewis widow of the said Mark Lewis, proceedings were had under an order of this Court whereby the widows third of the Real Estate of the said John Numbers decd. was divided among his heirs and legal Representatives, and in said division there was twenty acres and twenty eight square perches in two separate pieces land off and allotted to the said Mary now wife of your petitioner and Mark Lewis, which said Mary and Mark are the only children and heirs at law of the said Rhoda Lewis making in the whole one hundred acres and six square perches to be taken into consideration by the freeholders to be appointed on this petition that said lands and premises ought now to be equally divided between the said Benjamin Graham and Mary his wife in right of the said Mar and the said Mark Lewis agreeably Law. They therefore pray the Court to appoint five sufficient freeholders of the County to go upon the lands and premises of the said Rhoda Lewis decd. and divide the same equally among the said Benjamin Graham and Mary his wife in right of the said Mary and Mark Lewis, agreeably to the directions true intent and meaning of the Acts of the General Assembly of this State in such case made and provided.
