Beginning, middle P:952. “Thomas COOCH came from England, and in 1746, purchased a tract of land in Pencader, containing two hundred acres, being a part of the land warranted to William JAMES. He resided in this hundred, and purchased other lands in the vicinity of the tract above-mentioned. On the 8th of July, 1776, there was resurveyed to him two hundred and twenty-nine acres on a warrant of resurvey granted June 5, 1776. In September of the same year, while the British were in this neighborhood just previous to the skirmish, they had their headquarters on land of Thomas COOCH, at the present site of J. Wilkins COOCH’s residence. During this skirmish, the mill on these premises was burned by the British. At the time of his death, in 1791, Mr. COOCH was the owner of eight hundred and fifty acres and one hundred and forty-two perches of land in the Welsh tract. This property was divided among his heirs, and the larger part of it has descended and in now in the possession of William and J. Wilkins COOCH. The old forge, erected in connection with the “Abbington Iron Works” is on land owned by them. Among the papers of Thomas Cooch was found an assessment list of Pencader Hundred, with the amount of tax paid by each person. The assessment was made by Thos.
