The Bible is in possession of Mrs. Lena Messick, widow of Harrington, Bridgeville, Del. "Sacred to the memory of Isaac Messick who died in April 1779. He was the first of the line that settled in Sussex Co. He owned these lands and was the father of thirteen children who had arrived at maturity at his death, from whom a numerous race has sprung. He was a good and exemplary man as evidenced in the much culture of his children."From the stone erected to his memory by Miles Messick his great grandson,m Feb. 1888. Isaac Messick, my great grandfather, lived in Broadcreek Hundred, Sussex Co. Del. about 5 miles east of Laurel and near the public road leading from that town to Georgetown, the County-seat. Will made 31st. March, probated 28 April 1779 (From Will Book in Register's Office) His children were; Luke Messick George Messick Nehemiah Messick John Messick Covington Messick, (who was my grandfather) Joseph Messick Isaac Messick Sarah Messick Alse Messick Ann Messick Constant Messick Priscilia Messick Bithany Messick "Sacred to the memory of Covington and Hannah Messick, his wife. Covington died Dec. 17, 1828, aged 73 years. Hannah died Feb. 1838, aged 77 years. They were the parents of 9 children, who all grew to maturity. They were promoters of these lands, were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Covington was the first named Trustee of Asbury Chaple. The memory of the just is closed. MARRIAGES Samuel Messick, son of Covington Messick and Betsy Matthews, daughter of Phillip Matthews, was married by the Rev. William Williams on the 24th of March in the year of our Lord 1814, and were born, the first named on the 28th of October 1791, last on the 27th. of February 1794. John M. Messick, son of Samuel Messick and Mary Ann Cannon, daughter of Burton Cannon, was married Dec. 1843. James W. Messick, son of Samuel Messick, and Sarah Huffington, daughter of Littleton Huffington, was married Oct. 1840. Robert P. Barr, son of Robert Barr and Susannah W. Messick, daughter of Samuel Messick, was married Dec. 1, 1842. Born Jan. 30, 1819, died June 27, 1876. Miles Messick, son of Samuel Messick and Sarah Eliza Bell, daughter of Wm. Bell, was married by the Rev. James Allen on the 3d. of Dec. in the year of our Lord 1840. Wm. W. Morgan and Sarah E. Messick, daughter of Samuel and Betsy Messick, was married August the 27th in the year of our Lord 1850. Former died 1891, latter died in 1881. Jeremiah Pasterfield, son of Philip Pasterfield and Eliza Jane Messick, daughter of Samuel Messick, was married Nov. 4th. in the year of our Lord 1851. John C. Cannon, son of Joseph B. Cannon and Julia Ann Messick, daughter of Samuel and Betsey Messick, his wife, was married October 1856. John C. Cannon died August 1876. Wm. Morgan died Sept. 17, 1891. SAMUEL MESSICK'S FAMILY BIRTHS Miles Messick, son of Samuel and Betsy, his wife, was born September 14, in the year of our Lord 1815. Died Oct. 12, 1896. John Matthews Messick, son of Samuel Messick and Betsy, his wife, was born January 13, in the year of our Lord 1818. James Williams Messick, son of Samuel Messick and Betsy, his wife, was born January 19, in the year of our Lord 1820, died Feb. 13, 1886. Lucy Wingate Messick, daughter of Samuel messick and Betsy, his wife, was born May 20, in the year of our Lord, 1822. Samuel Tindal Messick, son of Samuel and Betsy, his wife, was born October 16, in the year of our Lord, 1824. Sarah Elizabeth Messick, daughter of Samuel Messick and Betsy his wife, was born February 17, in the year of our Lord 1828. Julian Messick, daughter of Samuel Messick and Betsy his wife, was born July 27 in the year of our Lord 1830, departed Aug. 11, 1912. Eliza Jane Messick, daughter of Samuel Messick and Betsy his wife, was born March 10 in the year of our Lord 1833, and died August 1852. MILES MESSICK'S FAMILY Samuel Bell Messick, son of Miles Messick and Sarah E. Messick, was born 29th of May 1842, and departed this life June 14, 1842. Miles Edwin son of Miles Messick and Sarah E., his wife, was born Sept. 15, 1843, and died June 23, 1863. William Kendal Messick, son of Miles Messick and Sarah E., his wife, was born 22nd of March 1847. Samuel Harrington Messick, son of Miles Messick and Sarah E., his wife, was born March 23, 1852. Albert Messick son of Miles Messick and Sarah E., his wife, was born April 30, 1860. Willard Irvin Messick, son of Miles Messick and Sarah E., his wife, was born March 22, 1866. Samuel Burton Messick, son of Jonn M. Messick and Mary Ann, his wife, was born Nov. 6, 1841, died about 6 years. Miles Covington Messick, son of John M. Messick and Mary Ann, his wife, was born Nov. 12, 1846, died at about 4 years. Sarah Eliza Pasterfield, daughter of John C. Cannon and Julia Ann, his wife, was born August 12, 1857 and died August 1876. Philip Matthews Barr, son of Robert P. Barr and Susanah, his wife, was born Sept. 16, in the year of our Lord 1846, and died July 31, 1862, aged 15 years, 17 mos. Volume 5, October 1934, No. 4 MESSICK FAMILY - continued Isaac Jefferson Morgan, son of William W. Morgan and Sara E., his wife, was born August 4 in the year of our Lord 1851. DEATHS Samuel Messick departed this life April 16, 1841. His disease was said to be Bilious Pleurisy. His funeral was attended on the 18th by the Rev. Jonathan R. Rorbert, from John 6:27. aged 49 years and 6 mos. John M. Messick, second son of Samuel Messick, departed this life August 23, 1848. His disease was said to be King's Evil with which he was affected about 30 months. aged 30 years, 7 months 10 days. Samuel T. Messick, son of Samuel Messick and Betsy his wife, departed this life July 18, 1847, aged 24 years 9 mos. 3 days. Susanah Barr, daughter of Samuel Messick and Elizabeth, his wife, departed this life July 19, 1870, aged 48 years, 2 mos. R.P. Barr, born Jan 30, 1819, June 27, 1876. Julia A. Cannon, died Aug. 11, 1912. Eliza Jane Pasterfield, wife of Jeremiah pasterfield, departed this life the 10th day of August 1852. Eliza Jane Pasterfield, daughter of Jeremiah Pasterfield and Elizabeth his wife, departed this life on the __ of Sept. 1852. Philip M. Barr, son of Robert P. Barr and Susanah his wife, departed this life July the 31st in the year of our Lord 1862. Miles Edwin Messick, son of Miles Messick and Sarah E., his wife, departed this life June 23rd 1683, aged 19 years, 9 months and 8 days. Betsy Messick, widow of Samuel Messick, Sr. Departed this life 1st March 1871, aged 77 years and 4 days. Kendal M. Lewis, who resided near Laurel, Del., departed this life Jan. 19, 1862, aged 90 years, 2 months and 6 days., (A transcript from his tomb stone at Louisville, now called Bethel, by Miles Messick, 1805, Susanna Lewis was b. Sept. 24, 1808 and d. Sept. 16, 1886, aged 80 years, 7 m0., 11 days.) Covington, son of Isaac Messick of Broadcreek Hundred, Sussex Co. Del. and Hannah Tindal, daughter of Samuel Tindal, of Nanticoke hundred, Co & State aforesaid, were married July 2, 1782. She d. Feb. 1838, aged 72 years. Their children were: Minos T. Messick, born May 28, 1783 Lovey Messick, born Aug. 4, 1785 (She married Adam Short of H C, HA.) Covington Messick, born July 1787. Samuel Messick, b. Oct. 28 _____, d. April 16, 1841. Miles Messick, b. Sept. 25, 1789, d. April 1813. Leah Messick, b. May 4, 1794 d. March 1, 1881, aged 86 yrs. 10 mos. 27 days. Nancy Messick, b. Oct. 3, 1796 Betsy Messick, b. Jan 5, 1799. Holland Messick, dau. b. July 11, 1800 d. Jan. 1885. Covington Messick, the father, d. Dec. 17, 1828 of paralysis, aged 75 years. This record was contributed by Mrs. Mary Turpin Layton, (now deceased) ---------------------------------- From: Marriages and Deaths of the Lower Delmarva 1835 - 1840 9 Oct 1837 - Chancery case involving Isaac Messick who died, seized of real estate in Caroline Co., leaving a widow, Rhoda Ann Messick and an only son, Edward Messick. Said Isaac Messick was indebted to Atwell Chance who has also died; a letter of administration on his estate granted to Rebecca Chance and John W. Conaway. Rebecca has married Delaha Sparkling.
