Complete Transcription This file is part of the Delaware Tombstone Transcription Project http://www.usgwtombstones.org/delaware/delaware.html ********************************************* http://usgwarchives.net/de/defiles.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ********************************************* Contributed to The USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project & USGenWeb Archives by: Marjorie E Adams ( marjea@wildblue.net ); assisted by Susan Smith Bunting and Jane Hancock McComrick Last updated: 1/10/2010 Foreword: My transcription in Oct 2005 was prompted by the discrepancies between names and dates noted by my mother and those published in 1961 posted on this site as Rural Selbyville Cemetery. At the time I was unaware of Millard Hudson's 1926 survey; checking it later I was surprised that I had found all but three of the interments listed in his work and two that he did not list. ARRANGEMENT. Stones seem to be somewhat haphazardly placed with some facing east, some west and some south. Nevertheless in Oct 2009 I attempted to assign row and position numbers as, in some cases, this helps to connect family members. DATES. The oldest interment found was Eber Long d 1848. I found more Murray markers in Joe Long Cemetery than Longs but if J. Thomas Scharf was correct in his 1888 History of Delaware that "interments began over a hundred years ago", there were earlier interments. There are many empty spaces yet other areas seem very crowded. Some of the markers are partially sunk beneath the surface, and it is ikely that there were interments in the central section which has has no markers; this could have been the original cemetery with cedar plank markers which have decomposed. HISTORY. Joe Long (1780-1856/7) son of Benjamin of David LONG, married Mahala Murray of David Murray; Joe Long was my 3rd great grand father. The cemetery was originally on Joe Long's property according to my 2nd great grandmother (Henrietta Murray Long granddaughter of David Murray; she married Charles Henry Long, the grandson of Joe Long). Over the last two centuries there were many Long/Murray marriages so it is not surprising that my research on the interments found that all are from my direct LONG and MURRAY ancestors or their close relatives.
