An inquisition taken this seventeenth day of May A.D. 1860, at the house of Wilson Messick in Broad Creek hundred Sussex County Delaware before Jacob Faucett, Coroner of said County, upon view of the dead body of Jane Messick by the oaths and affirmation of John P. Conaway, James P. Barker, Charles H. Jones, Jacob Jester Jr., Kendal Smith, Samuel C. Messick, John N. Messick, Johnson W. Cannon, Philip Mathews, Silas Calhoun, Henry Baily, John Mooney - lawful men of said county, who being in due manner sworn & affirmed say that the said Jane Messick came to her death by accidentally falling in the fire. Henry Bailey 12 John Mooney Wilson Messick sworn says that on Tuesday last May 15th 1860 about 6 oclock I was out in the orchard ploughing, I heard my son hollowing and I started to the house to see what was the matter, and when I got to him he said his mother Jane Messick was burnt to death, when I got to the house, I found her lying in the fire place burnt to death, her head and arms were burnt very badly. Wilson Messick Jonathan Messick sworn says that on Tuesday afternoon last about 6 oclock he was back of the house covering corn, when my little sister about 5 years old came out and said that Mother had fire on her, I went to the house immediately and found Mother lying in the fire place, burnt to death, there was no one in the house but her, I throwed a bucket of water on her, and pulled her out of the fire. Jonathan (his x mark) Messick Sarah Ann Messick Sworn says that on Tuesday afternoon (page 4) last about 6 oclock, I was out in the field when I heard my brother Jonathan hollow that Mother was burnt up I ran to the house and found her dead, she was burnt badly about the head, body, arms, &c all were burnt but her feet, she was subject to having spasms.
