Information about the family follows the will. In the name of God, Amen, the Eighteenth day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and ninety two, I, John Hosea of Sussex County and State of Delaware being in reasonably good health and of perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God, therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed to all men once to die do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say, principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in decent Christian manner at the discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath been pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, demise and dispose of the same in the following manner, viz: First I give and bequeath unto my Grandson MATTHEW HOSEA*, one hundred acres of land, lying and being in County of Sussex and known by the name of New Dublin and all the Warrant land that I hold on the North side of a small stream running through the aforesaid tract of land, all to him, his heirs and assigns. Item: I give and bequeath unto my Grandson THOMAS HOSEA** all the remainder of one tract of Land called Snow Hill, all except that part that I sold to WILLIAM KIRKPATRICK and that which is my dwelling plantation, then all the remainder to him and his heirs and assigns forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my Grandson JOHN HOSEA*** (son of John****) all the remaining part of my Warrant land that is not sold to William Kirkpatrick nor willed to Mathew Hosea. Item: I give and bequeath unto my well loved wife MARY HOSEA, my dwelling plantation where I now live on, and all my moveable estate, during her natural life and widowhood and afterwards this fifty acres of land where I now live I give and bequeath unto my grandson JOHN CALLOWAY*****, with all the privileges and benefits thereunto belonging with my housing plantation to him and his heirs and assigns for ever. Item: I give and bequeath unto each of my grandchildren except JONATHAN HOSEA and those that have land willed to them by me, then all the others to have five pounds apiece, to be levied and raised out of my Estate, and then this money to be delivered after my Wife's death, or marriage if so much there be, and the remainder for her to give to her child or grandchildren as she may think best. Also I appoint John Williams and my Wife, Mary, joint executors of this my Last Will and Testament, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament, and I do hereby utterly disavow, disallow and revoke all other former Wills, Legacies and bequests by me heretofore made. (his X mark) KIRKPATRICK William (his X mark) CAHOON John Hosea (his seal) SUSSEX COUNTY MEMORANDUM the 23rd day of April 1796, before me, Phillips Hollcok, Register appointed for the Probate of Wills and granting Letters of Administration for the County aforesaid, appeared William KIRKPATRICK and William CAHOON, two of the Witnesses to the within Will, who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God, did severally depose and say that in their sight, presence and hearing the Testator, John Hosea, did Sign, Seal, Publish and declare the same to be his Last Will and Testament, and that at the doing thereof he was of a sound and perfect mind, memory, and Judgement, and that they and each of them together with James BEVINS, subscribed the same as Witnesses in the presence of the Testator and at his request. Phillips Kollock, Register Family Notes: *MATTHEW HOSEA: believed to be the son of Arthur HOSEA. Born abt. 1780, died 15 May 1819, Sussex. Married Rhoda SHORT (b. abt. 1780- d. 30 May 1822) the daughter of Shadrach SHORT. Rhoda died soon after her re-marriage to Benjamin FOOKS on 02 Sept.1820 in Portsville, DE. Children of Matthew Hosea and Rhoda Short: (1) Abner Hosea - no information (2) Nancy Hosea - no information (3) Thomas Isaac Hosea b. 05 September 1807 - d.11 Feb. 1895, Marengo Co., AL, m. (1) Ann D. LOCK (2) Mary Watkins. (4) Ann Bell Hosea b. 14 April 1805 also migrated to Marengo Co., AL where she died 05 Dec. 1891; m.Thomas J. SKINNER. (5) Shadrach Short Hosea b.12 May 1810 - d. 1891 Brenham, TX; m.(1) Harriet DOUGHERTY, (2) Lucinda Sarah SIMPLE on 14 November, 1845 (3)Adeline Amanda Rainwater Carrington. He had 14 children in all. (6) Sarah Stone Hosea b. 10 Sept. 1817 - d. 23 March 1896; m. Isaac GILES. ** THOMAS HOSEA: This may refer to Thomas Vaughn Hosea(son of Arthur Hosea) born 05 December 1780, Sussex. He married Elizabeth CATHIEL in 1807 in Hancock County, Georgia and died there on 15 November 1824. Their children were: (1) Arthur B. Hosea b. 09 January 1809 in Georgia (2) Louise C. Hosea b. 1811- d. 1857; m. Hugh RODGERS (3) Ann Calloway Hosea b. 1814 Alabama - d. 1839 Alabama; m. Brazil Ransom BRADFORD. (4) James Christoper Hosea b. 17 Sept 1816, Alabama - d. 04 August 1821. (5) Thomas Vaughn Hosea, Jnr. b. 11 December 1822, Alabama - d. 12 November 1852. ***JOHN HOSEA III: grandson of Mary and John Hosea, Sennior., was the son of Levinah (Unknown) and John Hosea, (Junior) of Sussex, DE. He was born 11 September 1792 at Little Creek Hundred, Sussex. Married Nancy Tindall JEFFERSON 20 August 1823 in Portsville, DE. She was born 20 November 1805, the daughter of Warren JEFFERSON and Sabra FOOKS. Children of John Hosea and Nancy T.Jefferson were: (1) James W. Hosea (17 Dec. 1824) m. Elizabeth L. WATTS in 1851. (2) Sabra Jane Hosea (3 May 1827 - 2 Nov. 1904) m. John Wingate SHORT in 1844. (3) Sarah Ann Hosea (b. 29 May 1829) m. Benjamin D. BURTON. (4) John Henry Hosea (b. 25 August 1831) m. Hester Jane MORGAN in 1859. Moved to Pawnee county, Nebraska where he died 10 June 1882. (5) William T. Hosea (1833-1834). (6) Isaac Thomas Hosea (b. 28 Nov. 1835 - d. 21 August, 1901), m. Rachel Esther CARTER of Nicholas Co., KY. Moved to St. Joseph, Missouri where he became successful in the dry goods business, banking & insurance, bridge building, was mayor of St. Joseph and later Superintendent of Schools. (7) Benjamin Solomon Hosea (1838-1862) (8) Lavenia Ellen Hosea (b. 1840) m. John M. BURTON. (9) Mary Catherine Hosea (b. 7 July 1843- d.23 July 1879) m. George P. MORRIS. (10) William Edwin Hosea (b. 26 April 1846 - d. 17 April 1893) m. Jennie SMITH. Joined his older brother, Isaac, in St. Joseph, Missouri becoming successful and quite wealthy in the dry goods business. His home, located on "Mansion Row" still stands, having been renovated. **** JOHN HOSEA Junior: The exact date of his death is not known however, since his estate settlement was in March of 1794, presumably he died 1793 or early '94, perhaps before his own father. The Orphan's Docket of Sussex, Delaware lists the children of Levinah and John Hosea Junior as (1) Elener, (2) Eunice, (3) Polly, (4) Nancy, (4)Levinah, (5) Thomas and (6) John, (this being John III who was named in his paternal grandfather's will.) Of these children, Nancy Hosea, born 26 November 1786, married Isaac BAKER of Sussex in 1809. *****JOHN CALLOWAY: son of Nancy Hosea and Thomas CALLOWAY. Nancy Hosea, daughter of Mary and John Hosea Sr., was born 17 March 1769, probably in Sussex and died between 1834-1849 in Jackson County, Florida. She married Thomas Calloway on 15 August 1783 in Sussex. Thomas Calloway (son of John Calloway and Sinah HALL) was born 15 Feb. 1762, died between 1834-1840 in Jackson County, FL. John Calloway, mentioned in the will of his maternal grandfather John Hosea, was born 26 Feb.1785, Sussex and died 28 August 1840 in Dale County, Alabama. He married Rachel MOBLEY on August 15, 1808 in Hancock County, Georgia.
