D., JAMES MAXEY. The medical profession in Alachua County has no abler or more trustworthy member than Dr. JAMES MAXEY DELL, who is the oldest physician and surgeon in length of practice at Gainesville. While Doctor DELL carries on a general medical practice, he is an expert in the scientific use of the X-ray, and has installed in his offices the finest X-ray equipment obtainable. Doctor Dell is a native of Florida and was born on a farm not far from Gainesville, in Alachua County, February 2, 1880, a son of Capt. JAMES MAXEY and MARY A. (CAMPBELL) DELL, the former of whom was a son of JAMES MAXEY DELL and was born near Newnansville, Florida, February 12, 1848, and died June 17, 1914, and the latter, born also in Alachua County, in 1850, died in 1920. The grandfather of Doctor DELL was a native of Virginia and when he came early to Alachua County, invested in land near Newnansville, which was then the county seat. He became an extensive planter and owned many slaves. Capt. JAMES MAXEY DELL spent his long and busy life in his native county. For a number of years he engaged in farming near Hague, but when the war between the states came on, he enlisted for military service in the Confederate Army, entering Captain Dickinson's company at Waldo. He served throughout the war both as a private and an officer. In 1884 he came to Gainesville, and from that time until his death in 1914, served almost continuously in some important public capacity. In 1887 he was appointed special agent in the United States Land Commissioner's office, from 1894 to 1897 served as tax collector, in the latter year was elected city clerk and served in that office for ten years, and from 1910 to 1912 served as tax assessor. He belonged to the order of Odd Fellows and was a steward in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. JAMES MAXEY DELL doubtless made many boyish plans for the future, as is the custom of youth, and one of these early plans he never gave up, that of becoming a physician and surgeon. He did his best while attending the public schools at Gainesville in the East Florida Seminary, and in 1898 entered the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond. He spent one year in that institution and then became a student in the Atlantic College of Physicians and Surgeons, which is now the medical department of Emory University. He graduated and received his medical degree in 1902, served the required period as an interne in Grady Hospital at Atlanta, and then established himself in general practice at Gainesville. He keeps thoroughly abreast of the times in his beloved science, yearly attending clinics in various medical centers, and has given a great deal of time to postgraduate work in the use of the X-ray. He belongs to numerous scientific bodies, and is an ex-president of the Alachua Medical Society, is ex-vice president of the Florida State Medical Society, and belongs also to the American Medical Association. At Ocala, Florida, on June 7, 1905, Doctor DELL married Miss JOHNNIE LIDDON, who was born at Branford, Suwanee County, Florida, and is a daughter of CHARLES A. and VIRGINIA LOUISE (HIERS) LIDDON, the latter of whom is a sister of Judge B.D. HIERS, extended mention of whom may be found in this work. The father of Mrs. DELL has been a prominent business man and citizen for many years. In 1917 he located at Tampa City, where he is president of the United Chemical Company. Mrs. DELL is a graduate of the Ocala High school. She is prominent socially and a well known clubwoman, being an ex- president of the Twentieth Century Club of Gainesville, and ex-corresponding secretary of the Florida State Federation of Women's Clubs. Doctor and Mrs. DELL have two children: JAMES MAXEY and MARY VIRGINIA. The family belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In political life Doctor DELL is a democrat, is a member of the City Council. During the World war both he and Mrs. DELL were exceedingly active in all patriotic movements. The doctor practically gave up all private professional work in order to devote his entire time to the cause, and Mrs. DELL found great satisfaction in the success of the Red Cross drives and that the special team of which she was captain won first prize in the sale of Liberty bonds in the county. Doctor DELL has been a member of the council of the Gainesville lodge of the Woodmen of the World and has been secretary of the local lodge of Elks. He was one of the organizers of the Inglis Fishing Club. "Other military men from the Seminal War years who left their names on the Florida map include a Georgia volunteer named NEWNAN, commemorated by NEWNAN'S LAKE and by the ghost town NEWNANSVILLE, former county seat of Alachua County."
