He was born near Albany, Georgia, January 22, 1856, received his early education in private schools at Bainbridge in his native state, and was admitted to the bar May 23, 1876, at Camilla, Georgia. On June I, 1876, he arrived in Florida and became associated in the practice of law with his brother, EDWIN MARCY HAMPTON, under the firm name of Hampton and Hampton at Gainesville. In July of 1876 E. M. HAMPTON established the Gainesville Times, the first democratic paper published there after the war, and the brothers continued its operation for many years. W. W. HAMPTON is a past eminent commander of the Knights Templars, is a member of the Mystic Shrine, is a Rotarian and is chancellor of the Diocese of the Episcopal Church in Florida. He is owner of the Hampton Building in Gainesville, and vice president of the First National Bank of Gainesville. He married MARY ELLEN JORDAN, and they had six children, four of them now living. The two daughters were Mrs. C. D. DENNIS and Mrs. W. J. BUCK, the latter now deceased. The sons, Captain W.W., Jr. Captain FRED J. of Tampa, and Captain EDWIN B., were all soldiers in the World war.
