Alachua County FlArchives Cemeteries.....Oak Ridge Cemetery ************************************************ Copyright. July 15, 2008 Oak Ridge Cemetery is located at 29 degrees, 33 minutes, 34.19 seconds North Latitude 82 degrees 15 minutes, 29.54 seconds West Longitude in southern Alachua County, FL. From the juncton of County Road (CR) 234 and US 441 in southern Alachua county, go north 3.6 miles on CR 234. The cemetery is on the east side of CR 234. Graves marked with metal funeral home markers are noted as these markers are often do not survive for a long time. The cemetery area, family groupings, and all tombstones were recorded with a digital camera and the full set of high resolution photos plus this text file will be placed in the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, for public use. First part of survey taken February 11, 2008. Second part of survey taken February 16, 2008. Third and last part of survey taken February 19, 2008. This cemetery is currently in use, but is poorly maintained. It is heavily wooded and many family plots are overgrown. (Surveyor's Comment: This cemetery has a main service road that bisects the cemetrery from north to south. I contacted Mr. Larry Saunders of Chesnut Funeral Home in Gainesville, FL. He confirmed that the graves on the western side of the service road are African-American and the graves on the eastern side of the service road are Caucausion The western side of the cemetery is lower in elevation and wetter than the eastern side of the cemetery. I had originally kept the eastern and western photos separate, but in re-naming the photos for placement in the Family History Library, I inadvertently lost the designators to indicate on which side of the cemetery the graves were located.) Bert Zetrouer (STW D. Bert) Note 1: Wheeler, Alice and Ellie. There is a flat concrete grave cover with flat headstone for Alice Wheeler. At the head of Alice Wheeler's grave is an deteriorating upright monument with both Alice and Ellie(?) Wheeler. Note 2: There are 6 similar grave markers aligned north to south which are of recent placement. They are similar and appear to have been placed at the same time. (Rollins, Exeter, & Stewart last names) Note 3: All these grave markers are identical and appear to have been installed recently, certainly not in the 1880's when some of the persons died. (Turner last name.) Note 4: There are 6 grave markers in a family plot with concrete curbing. The curbing appears to be much older than the grave markers, which are granite and appear to be of fairly recent origin. The placement of the granite markers in the plot is such that they must be at the foot of the graves. There were no older grave markers in this obviously very old family plot. (Zetrouer last name) Note 5: These graves are in a family plot surrounded by concrete curbing. Some of the graves are marked only by Funeral Home metal markers. There is an above ground tomb (no data on it) in this plot which has been cracked by the roots from a nearby tree. There is a large plot maker with the name "ZETROUER" on it. Note 6: These graves are in a family plot surrounded by a brick/concrete wall. All the markers appear to be very old and are beginning to deteriorate. Not 7: These names inscribed on one of the faces of a very large obelisk monument. The small markers for each of these 4 persons appear to mark the location of their grave and the large obelisk contains vital information. Their small grave stones are arrayed by the obelisk. Note 8: Transcriptions from the obelisk faces marking the grave of Levi Hickson follow: (First fact of the obelisk) The deceased was a native of Darlington District, So Ca. He removed to Barnwell District where in March 1823 he married Miss Susan Prothro, who survives him. Their union was happy and blessed with children of whom 7 survive. When about 30 years of age, he experienced a change of heart and united with the Baptist Church at Rocky Spring. In the summer of 1853 he removed to Alachua County, Florida where he closed his life. (Second face of the obelisk) The deceased was a man of more than common integrity. He was faithful, kind and true as a husband, Father, friend, citizen, and Christian. He discharged the tuties of life in the fear of God. And he died in the assured hope of a glorious resurrection. (Third face of the obelisk) And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the (Illegible) that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them. Note 9: These 4 grave markers are identical in type and size and laid out in a row. The stones are of obvious more recent placement and are of granite. Note 10: All these graves are in a fenced plot which is heavily overgrown with bushes and palmettoes. Note 11: These graves in a plot surrounded by wrought iron fencing. One vertical tombstone, very large and too heavy to move, has fallen forward from its base and the data cannot be determined on the face of the stone. There is a large obelisk with Geo. S & Martha W Riggs data inscribed, plus Matha W has a separate grave marker. It is possible that the tombstone that has fallen forward is the grave marker for Geo. S Riggs. Note 12: This recently affixed metal marker has been placed on an old rough-hewn stone. There is a very old rough stone curbing surrounding a plot large enough for several graves. Note 13: The four tombstones are aligned and adjacent. They are all very old. They are all thin upright marble slabs set into marble footings. Note 14: This small tombstone is clearly inscribed G. Harley Zetrouer. It is very unusual for a child of less than three years of age to have an initial and a middle given name on a tombstone. I have entered this tombstone as both Charley and G. Harley Zetrouer because it is such and oddity. Note 15: These two names appear on one tombstone with no last names. The closest tombstones to this stone are for Whitcomb and Williamson
