Dear Sir I am inclosing (sic) in this an application for Pension of Shadrack Sapp acted upon on the 3rd of this month. I also inclose (sic) application of same party in Aug 1907 signed by one of our Co. Commissioners when I objected giving my reason for objecting to the same and requesting them to read carfully (sic) what they were signing, and if all signed I would write and explain I have kept several Deserters from getting on the pension list and will do all I can in the future to do so. Page 036 S. H. Wienges, 2 Clerk Circuit Court, Recorder and County Auditor Alachua County Gainesville, Fla., ……………..191….. In 1865 I came to Gainesville and some of Dickinson’s men told me they were on their way to Bronson & beyond looking for some deserters named Sapp. On their return I was informed it was a fruitless trip. Some years ago I was in conversation with P. B. H. Dudley of Jonesville, a son of Capt. Dudley. He said Sapp boasted of lying in the scrub looking at Dickinson’s men when the (sic) were after him. I am sending both of these applications so you may see. In the application of 1907 Sapp admits he got a 90 day furlough at Knoxville and goes further and says he was not requested to return. In the proof by Polk in the last he Polk was Page 037 S. H. Wienges, 3 Clerk Circuit Court, Recorder and County Auditor Alachua County Gainesville, Fla., …………… 191….. Captured in Dec. 1864 and was in prison at Camp Chase. In the 1st application Polk says he was at Camp Chase but does not give any date of capture. Neither Polk or Sapp give any date when Sapp was furloughed but says at Knoxville. This was in Oct. 1862 we had just come out of Kentucky and in time to get in to the 2d battle of Murfreesborough. James Doig who was Dudley orderly Srgt tells me he was with his command at Bentonville at surrender, yet he signs this. I showed this to Mr. Doig to day and he says he did not make the statement over his signature. I informed (sic) I was going to send this paper today and if he desird (sic) he could write you stating why he signed this application. Page 038 S. H. Wienges, Clerk Circuit Court, Recorder and County Auditor, Alachua County Gainesville, Fla., ………………191….. Doig’s affidavit I think caused the Board to approve this as I appeared on the 3rd before them one of Sapp’s sons being present and informed them if they all approved this application I would write and see that Sapp would not be placed on the list, or any other Deserter if I could prevent it. Dear sir: IN RE: PENSION CLAIM #19209: Your application for pension was again considered by the State Board of Pensions on the 10th. inst., and I am directed to say that the Board does not consider the evidence submitted by you sufficient to controvert the charge of desertion on Dec. 17th., 1863 contained in the official war record. Yours very truly, Secretary. Page 048 August 27, 1914. Mr. S. B. Hardee, Trenton, Florida. Dear Sir:- In re pension claim #19209. I am in receipt of your favor of the 26th inst. relative to the application for pension by Mr. Shadrack Sapp in which you state that my last letter to Mr. Sapp had been misplaced, and I beg to advise that I am enclosing you herewith copy of the same. Mr. Sapp referred in one of his letters to a man by the name of Polk living east of Gainesville by whom he might be able to make proof if he knew his P. O. Address. He probably had reference to Henry Polk, Gainesville, Fla., R. F. D. #5. The official war record received from the Adjutant General at Washington states he was reported “Deserted December 17, 1863, in Fla.,” and Mr. Sapp states that he had a furlough for 90 days from Knoxville, Tennessee (date not given) and was not requested to return on account of the climate, and Mr. Sapp also in a later statement says that his communication was cut off by Sherman, and that he joined Capt. Lut- Page 049 -#2- terloh’s Company in March, 1865, under Capt Lou Williams, which was about fourteen months after the date of desertion claimed by the War Department. Should Mr. Sapp prove conclusively that he did have a furlough, it would still be incumbent upon him to make satisfactory showing to the Board why he failed to return at the expiration of his furlough, and I beg to advise that the Board does not consider that satisfactory proof has been presented to controvert the charge of desertion and covering the fourteen months out of service. Assuring you of my pleasure in serving you at any time I may be able, and with kindest regards, I am, Yours very truly, Secretary. Respectfully, (signed) Samuel B. Hardee He says that Dr. Ponce gave him a ferlough (sic) in the latter part of 1862, of course it is hard for these old people to remember these dates exactly, and it appears to me that he has shown positively that he did have a ferlough (sic), and that it was not practical for him to return to his orriginal (sic) army.
