Weeks and Leonard Baldwin, who being by me first duly sworn, depose and say, each for himself, that he is a citizen of Alachua in the State of Florida, and that he was a soldier of the 2nd Fla. regiment in the service of the Confederate States during the war between the States, and that said J. T. Weeks was a member of said regiment; that is acquainted with John Adams, the applicant named in the foregoing petition for a pension; that he knows of his own knowledge that the said John Adams rendered the service as soldier or sailor for the Confederate States during the war between the States asset forth in the foregoing petition for a pension. That he did not desert the Confederate service, and that the disability claimed by him to exist, does in fact exist and prevents him from earning a livelihood for himself, and these deponents being further sworn true answer to make the following questions, deposes each for himself and answers as follows: 1. D., who being duly sworn, deposes and says, that he is a physician, that he is a resident of the State and County aforesaid, that he personally knows John Adams, the applicant named in the foregoing application for a pension. This deponent further says that he has carefully examined the said applicant's physical condition and finds: (Here state nature, character and extent of wounds, disease or disability.) He is a great suffer of inflammatory rheumatism which unfits him for earning a living. This deponent further says that the said John Adams is permanently and totally disabled by reason of such rheumatism from earning a livelihood for himself by manual labor. W. C. Sistrunk, Clerk of the Circuit Court of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of the State of Florida, in and for Marion County, and ex-officio Clerk to Board of County Commissioners of said County, do hereby certify that at a meeting of the said Board held on October 8th, 1907, pension claim of Mr. John Adams was duly approved and on October 12th the said claim was delivered by me to the Agent of the Southern Express Company at Ocala for transmission to Tallahassee, Florida, along with several other claims, and receipt taken therefor. I Further Certify that it appearing that the said claims delivered to the Express Company never reached their destination, Mr. Adams prepared and filed a new application for pension, which said application was duly approved by the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting held on January 7th, 1908, and the same forwarded to Tallahassee, Fla., through the Southern Exp. Dear Sir: I am directed by Mr. Croom to acknowledge receipt of your letter in reference to Mr. John Adams' pension claim and to say that he will take the matter up with the Board of Pensions and will see what can be done in the matter. Mr. Adams claim has not yet been allowed - his witnesses failed to fill out blanks 6, 7, & 8 of the printed form and did not state whether or not he was with his command until the close of the war or not. We requested the War Department to furnish us with Mr. Adams' record as a soldier and this shows that he was discharged September 25, 1862 as under eighteen years of age. In his application Mr. Adams says that he was not discharged. Will you have him state whether he was discharged and re-enlisted or not. We are unable from the application to determine this or not. Croom Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Sir Enclosed please find a certificate from Clerk of Court to the effect that Mr. John Adams made application for pension on Oct. 8th 1907. Mr. Adams is in receipt of a letter stating that this application never reached the pension office. He made application again on January 7th 1908. You stated that if same was allowed it would be from date of filing of said application and think he should be entitled to same from time he made the first application as he is clearly not to blame for the application being lost in transit or misplaced. Hoping the pension board can see the matter in the same light and give Mr. Adams pay from Oct 8th to January 7th. I remain Very respty. J. W. Smith Would say that Mr. Adams is very much in need of his pension. He is a very old man and entirely incapacitated from performing manual labor. J. W. That he came home and was not in service for about four or five weeks when he enlisted in 2nd Fla. Cavalry in Capt. Jones company under Dickinson's command and served until the close of the war. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Marion, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since the ___ day of all my life. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Newnansville, Fla., under the name of John Adams, on the doesn't remember date, in Company B Pyles Co. 2nd Inft. of the State of Florida in the service of the Confederate States and who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED in Va., in the State of Virginia, on the don't remember date, 1864, on account of ? age. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the Confederate States in the year 1864, and did not desert the service of the Confederate States nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. (Here state whereabouts at close of Civil War.) That I was with Dickinson command at Baldwin. That I do not own property, including real estate, personal property, stocks, bonds, mortgages or other collateral securities of any kind in this or any other State, nor does my wife own with me jointly or separately, property to exceed in value the sum of five thousand dollars.
