Dear Sir, One John Bates of Island Grove Alachua County has been drawing a pension of $72.00 per year from the State ever since Dec. 9/1899 under the new act and many years back under the old act. The said John Bates died Dec. 14th 1900 and leaves his widow in a very destitute circumstances. She now wants authority to draw and due her husband as the quarter would of ended in 16 days more. Also if there is any ? for her to draw a pension to send proper blanks. Also send proper blanks to fill out if she can draw and due her husband John Bates. Bates, aged 55 years, who, being by me duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension provided by act of the Legislature, approved June 2, 1899, for indigent widows of deceased Confederate soldiers and sailors: I am the lawful widow of John Bates, deceased Pensioner No. 274, a pensioner of the State of Florida, died in Alachua County, Florida, Dec. 14th 1900 that I was legally married to said soldier on the 24th day of October 1866 at Orange Springs, in the State of Florida; that I have been a bona fide resident of the State of Florida continuously since the 17th day of Feby. 1855 that I do not own property, real and personal, to the value of $600 in this or any other State, and am not otherwise enabled, or in a position to earn a livelihood, and have no income from any source sufficient for a livelihood; that I have no children or other relation able so to do and whose legal duty it is to support me, and that I have not purposely disposed of my property for the purpose of availing myself of the provisions of this act. D. One Thousand Nine Hundred and nine, personally appeared before me, a notary public in and for the County and State aforesaid Georgia E. Bates a resident of Plant City County of Hillsboro State of Florida, who being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain a pension under the provisions of Chapter 5885, Laws of Florida, approved June 7, 1909. That she is the widow of John Bates who was enlisted under the name of John Bates, on the ____ day of March, 1862, in Company Dupree Co. 9th Fla. Regiment of the State of Florida and who was honorably discharged at Gainesville, 186_, on account of the end of the war. That she was lawfully married to the said John Bates under the name of Georgia E. ? in the County of Marion, State of Florida on the 24th day of October, 1866, and that she was not divorced from him and that she has not remarried since his death, which occurred on the 14th day of December, 1900, in the County of Alachua State of Florida. That she is a resident of Hillsboro County, Florida, and has continuously resided in the State of Florida since the 17th day of Feby. 1855. That she does not own property, including real estate, personal property, mortgages or other collateral securities, stocks or bonds in this or any other State to exceed in value the sum of Five Thousand Dollars.
