Barry, do hereby make application to the State Board of Pensions, for a pension to be granted to me under the act of 1907, Chapter 5600 of the Laws of the State of Florida, upon the following grounds: I enlisted and served in the military service of Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate or State service; that I was a bona-fide citizen of this State for ten years prior to the date of this application and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Florida, and that I am sixty four years of age and that from age and a double hernia I am unable to earn a living by labor. Cavalry regiment in the service of the Confederate States during the war between the States, and that said Joseph H. Barry war a member of said regiment; that he is acquainted with Joseph H. Barry, the applicant named in the foregoing petition for a pension; that he knows that the said Joseph H. Barry rendered the service as soldier or sailor for the confederate States during the war between the States as set forth in the foregoing petition for a pension. That he did not desert the Confederate army, and that the disability claimed by him to exist, does in fact exist and prevents him from earning a livelihood for himself, and these deponents being further sworn true answer to make to the following questions, deposes each for himself and answers as follows: 1. Barry who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 66 years of age, having been born on the 27 day of Jan., 1843 in the county of Liberty, in the State of Georgia. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Alachua, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since the ____ day ____, 1855. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Newnansville, under the name of Joseph H. Barry, on the ____ day of December 1861, in Company G 1st Fla. Calvary of the State of Florida in the service of the Confederate States and who was HONORABLE DISCHARGED at Cassville, Ga. in the State of Georgia, on the ____ day of May, 1865, on account of surrender of Confederate Army. (Here state fully any other military service performed by the applicant.) I was a gunmen in a battery at Knoxville, Tenn. Guarded prisoners to Richmond, Virginia. I was scouter in the N. C. mountains for bush whackers. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the Confederate States in the year 1865, and did not desert the service of the Confederate States nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. (Here state whereabouts at close of Civil War.) That I was at Cassville, Ga. in hospital. Please avoid technical terms.) That he is suffering from a double rupture (hernia) and is also a sufferer of chronic appendicitis and from which he is unable to earn a livelihood by manual labor. Ellis, married Susan E. Wilson 1-13-1866 Alachua Co. born May 5, 1837, died October 15, 1915 Pvt. Co. B, 2nd Florida Regiment Confederate States Army I have a clipping from an old newspaper stating that Vandyke Ellis enlisted in the Confederate Army in the spring of 1861 in Company B, 2nd Florida Regiment. This Company was organized by Captain Lew Williams, in Newnansville, Florida, and was mustered in at Jacksonville, Florida, on the 13th day of July, 1861, by Major W. T. Stockton. This Regiment was immediately sent to Virginia and remained there until Lee surrendered at Appomatox. I would like to become a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and will need two copies of the above War Records. Ellis, Confederate Veterans Dear Mrs. Johnston: Your letter of February 2, 1965, requesting Confederate Military Service Record of Joseph H. Barry and Vandyke H. Ellis, is acknowledged. Reference to our Confederate Pension Files has developed the following information. Joseph H. Barry received a Confederate Veteran's Pension under Certificate #2141, in his application he stated he was born January 27, 1843, in Liberty County, Georgia, enlisted at Newmansville, Georgia, December 1, 1861, serving in Company G - 1st Florida Cavalry under William Clark and Colonel Davis. He was discharged at Cassville, Georgia, on the surrender of the Confederate Army. He married Ida W. Hodges in Liberty County, Georgia, October 24, 1897, and died in Alachua County, Florida, March 6, 1919. I am enclosing photostatic copy of page #259 "Soldiers of Florida" Roll of Company I, 1st Florida Cavalry, indicating the name of Joseph H. Barry as carried on the muster roll of that company. Vandyke H. Ellis received a Confederate Veteran's Pension under Certificate #1784, in which he stated he was born in Chester County, South Carolina, May 5, 1837, and that he enlisted at Jacksonville, Florida, July 13, 1861, in Company B (Alachua Guards) - 2nd Florida infantry under Captain L. Williams. He was discharged April 9, 1865, at Appamatox [sic] Court House, Virginia, and died October 15, 1915, in Alachua County, Florida. He was married to Susan E. Wilson January 13, 1866. I am enclosing photostatic copy of page #82 from "Soldiers of Florida" muster roll of Company B, 2nd Florida Infantry, indicating that V. H. Ellis was carried on the company's roll from July 13, 1861, through April 9, 1865. I have not been able to identify Henry Ellis on the records in our files. This will certify that the above described and enclosed photostatic documents are true reproductions from official records on file in the State Board of Pensions, Office of the State Comptroller, Tallahassee, Florida.
