Battalion, 10th Florida Regiment in the service of the Confederate States during the war between the States, and that said Burrell Wiggins was a member of said regiment; that he is acquainted with Burrell Wiggins, the applicant named in the foregoing petition for a pension; that he knows that the said Burrell Wiggins rendered the service as soldier or sailor for the Confederate States during the war between the States as set forth in the foregoing petition for a pension. That he did not desert the Confederate army, and that the disability claimed by him to exist, does in fact exist and prevents him from earning a livelihood for himself, and these deponents being further sworn true answer to make to the following questions, deposes each for himself and answers as follows: 1. Croom Comptroller ******************************************************************************************* War Department, The Adjutant General's Office, Washington October 21, 1907 Respectfully returned to the Comptroller, State of Florida, Tallahassee It is shown by the records that Burrell Wiggins, private, Company F, 1st, also known as Holland's Special Battalion, Florida Infantry, and subsequently designated Company F, 10th Florida Infantry, C.S.A., enlisted November 4, 1862, to serve during the war. He is reported on the roll for September and October, 1864, last on which borne, as "Deserted Sept. 9 (of Aug. 15), 1864, from Hosp., Lake City, Fla." The name Burrell Wiggins, organization stated as Captain Lodlow's Company, Monalin's Battalion Cavalry, C.S.A., appears on a roll of prisoners of war paroled at Gainesville, Florida, in June and July, 1865. Nothing further bearing upon the subject of inquiry has been found of record. F. C. Ellis company F first Florida battalion in 1862 Alum Bluff Appilachicola [sic] River. We came back from Savannah February 1864 and met the fource [sic] of fedrels [sic] at Olusta after the battle I was sent to Lake City hospittle [sic] where I got leaf [sic] of absence for seven days to take private quarters at home and I taken seven week and my command being at Ceder [sic] Creek near Jacksonville and on my return was put in the stockade at bolding for being absent without leaf [sic]. Capt John Richard saw me, when the gard [sic] placed me there and had me released and I joined my company at Ceder [sic] Creek fourth with and some time in June the command left for Va and left me lying on the ground sick with ? fevor [sic] which I was sent to the Lake City hospittle [sic] how long I was there I cannot say I was unconscious for twenty one days this I obtained from my nurse. Henry Colson of our company now ded [sic] I was furlowed [sic] for ninety days was extended, sometime after ? and when the ? was made on Gainesville on hearing the canons I saddled my horse and went quick reported to Capt. Dickerson and he sent me as guide for Lieut Hanes in and about Newnanville and on his detachment return to Waldo. I went back home and soon attached myself to Capt. Ludlough's company then at Levyville in Dickerson's command. I was on picket duty on the railroad in the gulf hammock the night the yankees came out from Ceder [sic]Key on there way to Levyville and remained on duty or watch guard to Levyville and after the entrenched I and William Griffen volunteered to detect or inspect there fource [sic] and fortification and we did so. I reported it to Capt. Dickerson when the yank left Levyville. I volunteered and was given a small detachment to follow and find out where tha [sic] where encamped. I did so dispatched to Capt. Dickerson at 6 o'clock the fowerling [sic] mourning [sic] and kepted [sic] up with there whereabouts I and dispatching the same to the Capt to number foure [sic] very late in the afternoon, the next mourning [sic] or the mourning of the fight as we were on march I was sent for I and told to report to Capt Dickerson at the head of the line and on my arrival the Capt. gave me orders to go to my company Loudlough's and take a detachment of my pick of the man and go to ? and defend and keep the enemy from flanking him at all sacrifice of which I did and carried the flag of truce on the battle field the next mourning with my friend William Griffen by my side now ded [sic] was about my age and if there is any of Loudlough's company living I do not know there whereabouts. I neglected to say in the Gainesville statement that I have one witness Joseph Malphurs, Lacrosse Fla. I was acting ordely [sic] sergant [sic] and went to Gainesville to draw cash for the company and on arriving I was told the surrender had come this was the 9 day of May 1865. I went home 11 miles north of Gainesville of which was my fathers and my home ever since and if my survis [sic] meets anything in defending my country in war and politics for 46 years now in the way of sympathy or otherwise I will appreciate it. D. One Thousand Nine Hundred and thirteen personally appeared before me, a Clerk Circuit Court in and for the county and State aforesaid, Burrell Wiggins who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 67 years of age, having been born on the 13 day of September 1864, [sic] in the county of Alachua, in the State of Florida. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Alachua, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since the 13 day of Sept., 1864. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Alumn Bluff, Fla., under the name of Burrell Wiggins, on the 2 day of Nov. 1862, in Company "F" 1st Fla. Battalion afterward designated 10th Florida in the service of the Confederate States and who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Gainesville, in the State of Florida, on the ____ day of June or July, 1865, on account of the surrender. (Here state fully any other military service performed by the applicant.) I was left in the hospital at Lake City in June 1864 and after being in the hospital about 30 days they gave me a furlough after getting the furlough I came to the fight at Gainesville, Fla. and then went to Levyville and joined Capt. Luttenborugh's Company and served in his company until the surrender. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the Confederate States in the year 1865, and did not desert the service of the Confederate States nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. (Here state whereabouts at close of Civil War.) That I was at Levyville Levy County Florida when the surrender of the Confederate was heard. That I do not own property, including real estate, personal property, stocks, bonds, mortgages or other collateral securities of any kind in this or any other State, nor does my wife own with me jointly or separately, property to exceed in value the sum of five thousand dollars. Monalin's Battalion Regiment of the State of Florida at Levyville in the State of Florida on the about Oct. 1864; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the ____ day of close of war 1865; when he was HONORABLY DISCHARGED on account of close of war on acct. of surrender and suppose was parolled [sic] Gainesville in the State of Florida, and did not desert the Confederate States service or take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the war. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with Burrell Wiggins in Company Ludlow's Company Regiment Monalin's Battalion of the State of Florida, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Gainesville, in the State of Fla., on the ____ day of May 1865, by reason of surrender and I did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War.
