C. Crumm Comptroller ************************************************************************ (Letter) 1526942 WAR DEPARTMENT THE ADJUTANT GENERAL’S OFFICE WASHINGTON. May 26, 1909. Respectfully returned to the Comptroller, State of Florida, Tallahassee, It is shown by the records that William Addison, private, Company A, 7th Florida Infantry, Confederate States Army, was enlisted April 18, 1862; that he was captured August 31, 1864, and was exchanged sometime between September 19 and 22, 1864, at Rough and Ready, Georgia. F. C. Ainsworth The Adjutant General ************************************************************************ (Letter) Oct. 6th., ------1916. Mrs. Samantha Addison. Raiford, Florida. Dear Madam: Your application for pension was presented to the Board several days ago, and I have been directed to ad- vise you that the Board was unable to allow your claim for the reason that your husband is charged with desertion, and his own statement bears out the fact he left the army sever- al months before the close of the War and came home. It seems that he at one time drew pension from this state, claiming to have been honorably discharged at Appamatox on account of the close of the War. After the allowance of this claim he was charged with having deserted his command and there is on file with his application a letter written by him stating that he actually did leave the command several months before the close of the War. On the face of this evidence and the charge of desertion, the Board desires us to advise you that they are compelled to deny your application. Yours very respectfully, Secretary. ************************************************************************ (Letter) Starke Fla. April 18/11. Hon. Pension Bureau, State of Florida, Tallahassee, Fla. Gentlemen: I am informed that the name of Mr. Wm. Addison has been dropped from the pension rolls. This, I think, is unjust. Mr. Addison and I were mustered into the Army at the same time, Mar. 8/62. Co. 7th. Reg. I ranked as Second Seargant and the last two years I acted Orderly Seargant. If Mr. Addison over deser- ted I have no knowledge of it. Yours Truly, L. W. Wall, Starks, Florida Dear Mr. Wall: My recollection is that two years ago you told me that Benjamin Brannen, and William Addison deserted. Will you write me if I am correct in this and if there was no other man you mentioned at that time besides these two who deserted under similar circumstances. This information is wanted by the Board of Pensions. With my kindest regards and many good wishes for the “gentleman, from Bradford” I am, Sincerely your friend, Secretary ************************************************************** (Letter) June 30, 1910 Mr. William Addison, Lake Butler, Florida Dear Sir: Your letter of the 29th relative to your service will be submitted to the Board of Pensions at the next meeting. I am directed by the Board to ask you to furnish me with the names of the men who went with you to Col. Rhodes and who came home with you when you left the service, shortly before the close of the war. Yours very truly, Secretary to the Board Pensions ********************************************************************* (Letter) 14122 1282 Lake Butler, Fla. June 29th, 1910 To The Hon. Board of State Pensioners Tallahassee, Fla. Gentlemen: Your letter of recent date to Mr. E. L. Odom of Lake Butler notifying him that some one had reposted to your Honorable Board that I deserted the Confederate Army was duly read (?). In reply I wish to make a statement of my soldiership during my time in the Confederate War to your Honorable Board as follows. I enlisted in the spring of 1862 for one year when my time expired I re-enlisted for how long I don’t remember. But I do know that I went through the war and I never lost a day from service only what time I was held a prisoner and I fought in every battle or engagement that the 7th Fla. Regiment was engaged in and I was always sent to the front ranks. I was ************************************************************************ wounded twice each time in different battles and each time my wound was sufficient to of sent me to the Hospital or a furlow to of come home. I didn’t lay my gun down in either incident kept on fighting until the engagement closed and there kept info with my Company. I never ask to be sent to the Hospital or a furlow to come home in either incident. I was captured in the Battle at Jonesborough, Ga. on the 4th day of July, 1864 and was held a prisoner at Atlanta, GA for 20 days and I was exchanged and I returned to my Company. And when ever there was any laborious duties to be performed, I was always call upon to help do it and I never failed or refused to obey orders. I never ask to be excused from any duties that was imposed upon me and I never ask for a furlow during the war or from the time I enlisted to come home to see my family and it was a general talk all through the army that the Confederates were whipped and that there would be no more fighting and I didn’t see any use of our staying any longer as they wouldn’t have any further use for us so on the 20th day of Feb., 1865, three of my comrades and I went to our first Lieutenant Col. L. B. Rhodes and told him that we were coming home and he didn’t object to our coming home. So, we give up our guns and taken our effects and pulled out for home. We walked the entire distance. We got home on or about the first of March, 1865. I didn’t hide or lay out from my house. I went to work to try to support my family for I found them destitute. I didn’t feel, think or look at it that I was deserting my Army. If I had of had any intention of deserting the Army, I would of done so before going all through the war and doing all the hard fighting and other hardship that I had to undergo. If either of you were in the Confederate War and was in the heaviest part of it, you have some idea as to what one had to undergo ********************************************************************* Now then Gentleman the young man that reported me knows nothing about the war and what I have told you here are facts and to confirm my statement I take pleasure in referring you to my comrades that I know of that is living and their addresses. M. L. McKinney, John Croft, J. A. Langford, Benj. B________(?) and C. A. Johns of Lake Butler, Fla. W. C. Kerce(?) of Guilford, Fla. and T. W. Seveat (?) of Starke, Fla. Now, Gentlemen, my soldiership is before you to act on. I am old and feable, not able to work and my wife is in the same conditions. If you will continue to grant me a pension which feel and think I am entitle to I will ever appreciate it.
