The maiden name of the deceased was Miss Harriet Jones. She was born in Georgia 84 years ago and came to Florida while it was still a territory. In 1843 she was married to Mr. Nathaniel Sparkman, who had a large plantation north of Crosby and Hampton Lakes. He husband fought in the Indian and Civil Wars and she bravely stood the hardships to which she was exposed during these times. In 1869 she became a widow, and lived on and managed the plantation with the help of some of her sons until the early 80's when it was sold. For many years past she has made a Starke her home and was known as "Grandma Sparkman," endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a member of the Baptist Church and lived a true Christian life. The deceased of survived by nine children, six son's: Messer's J.J. Sparkman of Starke; N.N. Sparkman of Crystal River; S.W. Sparkman of Astor; R.L and R.M. Sparkman of Jacksonville; C.M. Sparkman of Plant City and three daughters, Mrs. C.B. Tillis of Waldo; and Mrs. T.F. Mansell and Mrs. W.H. Underhill of Starke, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The late Captain J.M. Jones was her brother and she was the last of her family. The interment took place at Prevatt Cemetery, south of Starke, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W.F. Malphns officiating. A large procession of mourners should their esteem for the deceased by following the remains to their last resting place. All of her children were present at the funeral except Messer's N.N and S.W. Sparkman, who could not arrive here in time.
