Smoke Age of Soldier: 88 years, 23rd July 1847 in Orangeburg County South Carolina Resident of: Broward County since October 1885 Enlistment: Orangeburg, S.C. on the 1st August 1863, in Company C, Regiment Second of the State of S.C., C.S.A. Discharge: Orangeburg, South Carolina Military Service: Was in Augusta, Ga. making shoes for the Confederate Navy Physical Condition: Been confined to bed for about a year. Physically and mentally weak. Claim for Pension Filed: Dec 21 1933 Approved: Jan 31 1934 With pay from: Dec 21 1933 At the rate of: $480.00 per annum Signed: Secretary of Board ***************************** WAR DEPARTMENT Washington September 8, 1933 The records of this office show that one L. W. Smoak also shown as Lewis Smoke, private Company C, 2nd Regiment South Carolina State Troops, Confederate States Army, enlisted August 1, 1863, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. The muster roll of that company for the period from December 31, 1863, to February 2, 1864, last roll on file shows him absent, detailed by General Beauregard. Other records show him in Augusta, Georgia, making shoes for the Confederate Navy, and no later record has been found. E. Rickenbacker was Sergeant of that company. The other comrades mentioned have not been identified as of that organization. A. W. Smoak and J. M. Smoak served in Company E, that regiment. Signed: E. T. Conley Brigadier General
