He maried Vesta McKinney, daughter of Aaron and Annie Elizabeth (Shepperd)McKinney. Carl's family met the McKinney family while they were living in Alabama and both families came to Florida together. Vesta's sister married Carl's Uncle, (Jasper Black). The name of Carl's mother is somewhat a mystery. His death certificate shows her to be the above, however his brothers death certificate gives a slightly different last name. Carl, himself most likely, gave the information to the Veterans Administration, ( who was the informant on his death certificate). On his brother's death certificate their mother's name is given as Sophronia Brazel, which was supplied by a grieving widow and could have been slightly confused under the stressful circumstances. Sophronia was actually the middle name of their grandmother. It is also noted that there are Bracewell's found living next door through the years on some census records. The three last names; Basil, Brazel and Bracewell all sound alike making need of furthur investigation. After the birth of Carl's brother Willie (Bill), their mother passed away in either Marion or Citrus County, Florida about 1897. The two boys were living with their grandparents Peter and Susan Black in Marion County, on the 1900 census. Their father is in Citrus County with his new wife. Carl and his brother were raised by their father and step-mother Alice Black in Crystal River, Florida. The boys always thought of Alice as their natural mother and treated her with kindness...grateful for her influence in their lives. The fishing industry of Citrus County provided the Black Family well through the years. Carl stood by his father's side from a very young age learning the family business. It must have been hard on a young lad having to row boats and haul in nets filled with heavy loads of fish. It wasn't all work though! The family would travel to the islands "just to get away from the sweltering heat in town." They often camped out overnight;fresh fish frying on an open fire, the soft whisper of of the distant sound of an owl, crickets chirping and the gentle breeze of the warm salty air. If you could keep your attention away from the blood sucking mosquitoes it would have been nice growing into adulthood durring those times. Carl was a commercial fisherman in Crystal River his entire life except for the brief time he moved his family to Orange County, to work with his wife's father on an orange grove driving a truck. That didn't last long however, and soon he was back in Crystal Rriver and back to fishing. When WW I came along, Carl was inducted into the Army in Inverness, Florida August 25, 1918. He spent his Army life at Fort Jackson, SC until his honerable discharge December 9, 1918 due to Demobilization. His organization is given as...156 Dep Brig to 8-30/18; BTRY B 8 REGT F A Repl Camp Jackson SC to Disol. He was a pvt. Carl and Vesta Black had the following children: Edith, Louise, Jeanette Lee, Ruth Lughenia, Jesse and Charles. Carl died May 18,1949 at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in Pinellas County, Florida. He is buried at the old cemetery in Crystal River; west of US Hwy 19, downtown.
