Citrus County Chronical
Thomas Ray Sparkman,40 died at the University Hospital in Gainesville Friday
afternoon. Mr. Sparkman had been in the hospital several rimes in recent weeks
for examination and heart surgery was preformed Friday. He was a prominent young
business man of Crystal River,who began as a grocer with his father William A.
Sparkman, and his brother Marion, as a partner. Sparkman married the former Miss
Lucille Wall in 1949, Home Economics teacher in the Crystal River High School.
In 1954 the grocery store was enlarged and Mr. and Mrs Sparkman assumed the
ownership of it. Later it became affiliated with the IGA Food Stores and October
1962, the store moved in the new larger building on U,S, Route 19,the present
situation. 
Thomas Ray was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Crystal River Church
of Christ, and the American Legion Blanton Thomas Post #155. He was educated in
the local schools and graduated from the high school where he was popular in
many school activities.
Other than his wife Lucille, he is survived by a daughter,Elizabeth Ray 10 and a
son Thomas Ray Sparkman Jr. 3 also his mother,Mrs. William A. (Helen); a brother
Marion E.;two sisters Mrs. Christine Pullen, Jacksonville, and Mrs. Lucile
Butler, Portland, Oregon and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Monday afternoon at two p.m. at the First
Presbyterian Church, with his pastor Mr. Kenneth Scarborough of the Church of
Christ officiating. Internment followed in the family plot at the Crystal River
Cemetery. The Strickland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
