Dear Sir: Your application for pension was considered by the State Pension Board a few days ago, and I have been directed to advise you that they were forced to deny same for the reason that the Company in which you served was in the service of the State of South Carolina and not in the service of the Confederate States. There is no provision in the law under which soldiers service in the militia of any State other than Florida can receive a pension. Yours very truly, Secretary. Page 045 Feb. 10th, 1916. Salley, Jr. Secretary Page 049 December 31st, 1919 Mr. V. J. Valentine, Lula, Fla. Dear Sir:- Your application for pension was denied by the Board for the reason that your service appears to have been in the Home Guards of the State of South Carolina, and not in the regular Confederate States army. I beg to quote somewhat from the certificate received from the Secretary of the Historical Commission of the State of South Carolina, which recites in part as follows:- “I can say however, that this company if it existed, was not in confederate service, but a state militia company of old men and little boys.” Yours very truly, Secretary. Dear Sir: I beg to advise that your application for pension was again denied a few days ago for the reason that the service claimed by you was not such as to entitle you to a pension under the present Pension Law. I beg to quote herewith from a letter received from the Historical Commission of the State of South Carolina: “I can say however that this Company if it existed was not in the Confederate Service but a Company of old men and little boys”. I regret very much that assistance cannot be granted you, however, the law makes no provisions covering your case. Yours very truly, Secretary, State Pension Board. W/B Page 051 Chapter 8452 #57 V.
