Mr. Freedland was born at Charleston, South Carolina, in 1884, son of W. L. and ORPHA HEWES (TWOHILL) FREEDLAND, the former a native of Savannah, Georgia, and the latter of Charleston, South Carolina. His mother is still living having her residence in Jacksonville. When WILLIAM L. FREEDLAND was four years of age his parents came to Florida and located at Tavares, in Lake County, and soon thereafter established their home in Jacksonville. He grew up in that city, acquired his preliminary education in the public schools there, but his advanced education, both academic and law, was acquired in that splendid old Southern institution, Washington and Lee University, of Lexington, Virginia. He graduated with the degree of LL. B. from the Washington and Lee Law School in 1911. In the same year he took up active practice at Jacksonville, but in 1915 removed to Miami, and soon made for himself a high place in the professional circles of this city. During the World war he spent most of the time at Washington as an attorney on the legal staff of the United States Fuel Administration and later in the legal department of the United States Railroad Administration. Though one of the younger members of the bar, Mr. Freeland in sentiment is of the old-school tradition, his Southern birth and his associations at Washington and Lee University increasing this disposition. His practice has brought him enviable distinction in the Florida courts, particularly in the civil branch of the law. Besides his work in local and state courts he is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the United States Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Claims, the United States Court of Customs Appeals and the United States Supreme Court, in all of which he has appeared. In Martindale’s American Law Directory Mr. Freeland is given the highest ratings, both for his legal ability and his character and high standing at the bar. He is a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, the Kappa Alpha (Southern) fraternity, is a member of the Masonic Order and Trinity Episcopal Church. Mr. Freeland married Miss HELEN COMSTOCK, of Miami, Florida, formally of Dayton, Ohio. His sister, Miss SARAH O. FREEDLAND, of Jacksonville, is one of Florida’s prominent literary women. For a number of years she was active in journalism, formally society editor of the Jacksonville Times-Union, held a similar position with the Florida Metropolis of the same city, and was editor, owner and manager of the “Coat of Arms,” the society journal of Jacksonville. His brother, ELLICOTT HEWES FREELAND, who is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, is a major in the Coast Artillery Corps, United States Army.
